Topic: AASHTO Freight Rail Study Support Services - Understanding and Addressing Freight Rail Needs

Registration: https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description and Presentations: In 2018, the Association of American State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) completed its Freight Rail Study Support Services project. This study was a follow up to AASHTO's 2002 Freight Rail Bottom Line Report, which examined freight rail operations in the U.S., how those operations support freight transportation needs and the U.S. economy, and potential opportunities for greater coordination between public sector transportation agencies and private sector freight rail carriers. The more recent project was an effort to revisit the findings of the 2002 study, determine what changes have occurred in the freight rail industry since then, and examine what public-private partnerships have been developed over the last 15+ years. Based on the 2018 study findings, freight rail remains an important component of the U.S. freight transportation industry, one where relatively small investments can provide significant transportation and/or economic benefits. However, the freight rail industry in some ways has also matured significantly since the early 2000s, as operational improvement and coordination initiatives that were in the process of being implemented at that time have become well established.

This webinar will discuss some of the findings of the 2018 AASHTO freight rail study and talk about some of the efforts state DOTs have made to work with freight carriers to improve freight rail operations within their states.
