Dear Geographers:

I am pleased to announce the Department’s Annual Hammond Distinguished Lecture in Geography, which will be delivered by Dr. Rebecca Torres of the University of Texas-Austin.  The title of her talk is: “Precarious Childhoods and Exceptionalism in the U.S./Mexico Borderlands: Deported Mexican Migrant/Refugee Children and Youth.”

 

Please see and circulate the attached advertisement to any interested parties on campus. This special talk will be held at the Lindsay Young Auditorium at the UT Library on Thursday, Nov. 7.  A reception in honor of Dr. Torres will be held at the Gallery in front of the auditorium at 3pm with the talk to start at 3:40pm.

 

Dr. Rebecca Maria Torres is associate professor in the Department of Geography & the Environment, associate of the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, associate of the Population Research Center, and affiliate of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her areas of interest include (im)migration, Children/Youth Geographies, Gender, Feminist Geography, and Activist/Engaged Scholarship.

 

Since 2015, Dr. Torres has collaborated with a bi-national, trans-disciplinary team of scholars on research focusing on the current situation of refugee/migrant children and youth from Mexico and Central America. She is a previous NSF CAREER grant recipient and the author of numerous international publications. In 2019, the American Association of Geographers awarded her the Gilbert White Distinguished Service Honors  in recognition of her inspiring and effective work as a public intellectual and scholar activist. Over the last two decades, she has integrated her research, teaching, and service to promote social equity and justice.
