American Library Association (ALA) and its professional affiliates, including the American Indian Library Association (AILA), Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), Joint Council of Librarians of Color, Inc. (JCLC, Inc.) and REFORMA: the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking, will donate funds to libraries that are on the front lines of defending equity, diversity and inclusion.
In response to senseless and racially charged acts of abuse and violence in Gilroy, California; Dayton, Ohio; El Paso, Texas; Tallahatchie, Mississippi; and Baltimore, Maryland, ALA President Wanda Brown and ALA affiliates will each donate $500 to support library programming within the communities that address bigotry, foster understanding, and bridge the cultural divide. ALA launches national campaign against e-book embargo
The American Library Association (ALA) and the Public Library Association (PLA) have announced a public campaign in response to recent efforts to limit library access to e-books. In a press conference held at the Nashville Public Library during the 2019 Digital Book World conference, ALA debuted an online petition at eBooksForAll.org for members of the public to urge Macmillan Publishers CEO John Sargent to reverse the proposed embargo on e-books sold to libraries. The American Library Association (ALA) and Rakuten OverDrive have collaborated on a digital reading program – a national “digital book club” – which connects readers nationwide with simultaneous access to the same ebook through their public libraries. This program, called the Libraries Transform Book Pick, offers the new riveting post-apocalyptic novel “After the Flood” by Kassandra Montag, published by William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Image Comics is teaming up with ALA’s GNCRT and IFRT to celebrate #BannedBooksWeek
Image Comics is celebrating Banned Books Week with the ALA Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table and the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table by producing a week of Library Livestream webinars featuring creators and librarians in conversation on a number of pressing topics! Libraries around the country are invited to welcome their patrons for these exciting creator conversations during Banned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read, which runs from September 22 – 28. Public Library Association launches 2020 health insurance enrollment project
After a successful first year in which 92 public libraries participated, the Public Library Association (PLA) is proud to encourage enrollment in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace for 2020. Through its health insurance enrollment and education initiative, Libraries Connecting You to Coverage, PLA is offering mini-grants of $500 to support up to 100 U.S. public libraries. Awardees will disseminate information, provide education, partner with health insurance enrollment and provider groups, and encourage community members to enroll in the Marketplace during the Open Enrollment Period. United for Libraries invites Trustees to become Library Census Champions
United for Libraries, the American Library Association (ALA) Public Policy and Advocacy office and the Census Counts campaign has launched Library Census Champions, a new network of state, local and tribal library Trustees helping their libraries and communities prepare for the 2020 Census. ALSC shares statement and resources on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce the release of its equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) statement along with new resources that support the EDI-related work of the association. These materials, part of an ongoing commitment to EDI within the division and throughout the youth services library profession, further articulate and amplify ALSC’s commitment to EDI. Read more
