SEASide Webinar – Are you podcasting?
Date: September 18th, 2019
Time: 12 PM ET
Presenters: PJ Grier, MPA,MLIS, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM); Alicia Williams, BS, MPH, medical student (PCOM), Percy Takyi, BA, medical student (PCOM)
Abstract: As an alternative to radio or music playlists and primarily on mobile devices, people listen to various types of podcasts for enlightenment, learning or enjoyment. With looming board exams, pop quizzes and the need to understand basic human physiology, medical students face numerous stressors during their clinical years. Fostering resilience is a promising way to mitigate negative effects of stressors and prevent burnout (Houpy, J. et al. 2017). This moderated webinar is an example of how two students found a unique outlet to cope with the high-intensity onslaught of medical education. The webinar’s goal is to inspire health sciences librarians to embrace podcast platforms as another means of teaching aspects of library orientation and instruction.

The podcast has received over 800 content downloads; he is overjoyed by the positive feedback and looks forward to its expansion. During his first year of medical school, Percy struggled for a variety of reasons, but after a break came back better and more prepared to finish his first year successfully.
