SEASide Webinar – Are you podcasting? Date: September 18th, 2019 Time: 12 PM ET Presenters: PJ Grier, MPA,MLIS, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM); Alicia Williams, BS, MPH, medical student (PCOM), Percy Takyi, BA, medical student (PCOM) Abstract: As an alternative to radio or music playlists and primarily on mobile devices, people listen to various types of podcasts for enlightenment, learning or enjoyment. With looming board exams, pop quizzes and the need to understand basic human physiology, medical students face numerous stressors during their clinical years. Fostering resilience is a promising way to mitigate negative effects of stressors and prevent burnout (Houpy, J. et al. 2017). This moderated webinar is an example of how two students found a unique outlet to cope with the high-intensity onslaught of medical education. The webinar’s goal is to inspire health sciences librarians to embrace podcast platforms as another means of teaching aspects of library orientation and instruction. Presenter Bios: Alicia Williams, BS, MPH - Alicia is a third year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and has launched “Medicine In Color”, a podcast series that highlights the voices of men and women of color as they make their journey in medical careers. Among others, Alicia has interviewed a veterinarian, pharmacist and a medical school admissions advisor. To date, the podcast has received over 2,000 downloads across all platforms. A native of Savannah, GA, Alicia has a passion for health, community and civic engagement. Before medical school she served in the Obama Administration and worked with GENYOUth, an organization dedicated to healthy school communities. While there, she managed the organization’s digital and social media platforms, partnerships with companies, and successfully planned and executed special events. Percy Takyi, BA - Percy is a second year dual-degree medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 2018, he started a podcast series called “Behind the White Coat: Failure and Percyverance” where guests come to discuss how they’ve persevered through their trials and tribulations. The podcast has received over 800 content downloads; he is overjoyed by the positive feedback and looks forward to its expansion. During his first year of medical school, Percy struggled for a variety of reasons, but after a break came back better and more prepared to finish his first year successfully. His goal has been to change the narrative of failure and to encourage others to look at failure as a stepping stool. Percy emphasizes now that we learn so much from our struggles and if we take the right approach, we can be better off in the long run. PJ Grier, MPA, MLIS (moderator) - PJ Grier is an Associate Director at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – O.J. Snyder Memorial Library. His focus is on academics, student learning and research, in addition to expanding the library’s mission to include patient education frameworks that meet the needs of patients. His past work included a patient education needs assessment, building a statewide consumer health information network in public libraries and a clinical information delivery consortium for community hospitals. He also holds certificates in clinical informatics and non-profit leadership. Recently he was Co-chair for a MAC tri-chapter conference, on the MLA 2019 Nominating Committee and presented on a “Library Innovation Trial” at Boston University’s annual health literacy conference.
