Subject: RE: Informal biweekly meetings to learn programming skills (FREE)

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your kind offer!  I am debating how big the group can be while we can maintain a nice learning environment.  BGB 404 gives us an informal and relaxing environment and the room probably can comfortably sit up to 15 people.  So, let’s try it out with a smaller group first.  In this case, please share the information with your graduate students first and also those undergraduate students you think they will be very excited to join this group.

Thanks,

Shih-Lung

I think this is an excellent idea and covers skills our students need.

  • If you would like to advertise on the digital signage, please put together a slide that I can add to the digital signage on the 1st and 3rd floors of BGB.
  • If you would like me to advertise directly to my 311 students, please put together a one page PDF flier that I can share through Canvas.

Thanks - MC

Subject: Informal biweekly meetings to learn programming skills (FREE)

Hi Geospatial Group,

I am coordinating informal biweekly meetings of learning programming skills for students (and faculty/staff) who are interested in these learning opportunities (FREE).  These are non-credit, informal classes designed to encourage and enhance programming skills for self-motivated students.  Dr. Bruce Ralston, who retired from this department, and Dr. Mike Meyers, who received his Ph.D. degree from this department, have kindly offered to teach at these biweekly meetings (free of charge) this coming fall semester.  Dr. Ralston will start it by teaching how to build interactive mapping web sites.  Dr. Ralston plans to cover web development, web services, geospatial servers, and posrgrsql during this fall semester.  Dr. Ralston used to lead similar efforts in the Geography Department before his retirement and students benefited from such informal meetings a lot, which in turn prepared a cohort of geography students with strong programming skills.  My plan is to revive this good practice and create a nice learning environment for our students.

The current plan is to have the first informal meeting at 2:30 – 4:00 pm on September 6, 2019 (Friday) in BGB 404.  We then will have our BIWEEKLY meetings at the same time on Fridays (except for holidays and the fall break).  Since these are informal meetings, it would be fine to miss a meeting if students have another commitment.  But, we hope they can attend most classes; otherwise, it will be difficult to catch up and follow the materials.  Could you please share the information with your students and have them contact me if they are interested in joining this group?  You are welcome to join us too!

Best regards,

Shih-Lung
