The McGill Center for Social and Cultural Data Science (CSCDS) seeks a post-graduate to lead a data science team for a research project on creating and measuring stories that motivate climate-related action on the part of Canadian small- and medium-enterprises (SMEs).  This project is a collaboration between the National Film Board of Canada and McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management (PIs: Dror Etzion and Animesh Animesh), Faculty of Science (PI: Catherine Poitvin) and the Faculty of Arts (PI: Andrew Piper). McGill University and the National Film Board are joining forces to develop a comprehensive public engagement project showcasing the leadership role that SME leaders and entrepreneurs are playing and can play in accelerating ongoing social transformations to combat climate change. The goal of the data science team is to develop metrics that can be used to better understand the effectiveness of different kinds of narratives for motivating action by SMEs across different social media platforms.

In order to achieve these goals, we’re looking for an enthusiastic data scientist who can:

-        architect and implement data processing pipelines capable of ingesting substantial social media and traditional media streams

-        apply and develop text- and network-analysis algorithms

-        execute or manage detailed, rapid case studies to investigate specific trends in online data

-        think critically about how findings relate to individual and organisational behavior

The ideal candidate will have:

-        A PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, Information Science, or an equivalent discipline

-        Experience building high-performance, robust data processing and analysis pipelines

-        Experience designing and conducting text analysis using NLP techniques (e.g., topic modeling, sentiment analysis)

-        Experience with using network analysis techniques to study social network structure

-        Strong interdisciplinary and public communication skills

This position is for 1 year with the option to extend to a second year.  Annual salary range is $60k – 80k CAD depending on qualifications.  We are looking to fill this position by September 1, 2019.  If interested, please send a resume and statement of interest [log in to unmask]"> [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
