There are 3 vacancy announcements here that are entry level positions with
the FWS perfect for students, recent or soon to graduate from college. Be
realistic about your expectations, and look at the long term big picture.
If you want to work with the Service, apply for all 3 of these positions,
and all locations. Taking an entry level job will teach you a lot and you
will begin your career. If you expect to start out as a GS 11 or higher
grade right away, you will find it harder to get hired. Key to working
with the federal government is you need to demonstrate in your resume you
have at least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade, so a GS 5/7 job
is easier to qualify for if you've completed a BS or MS degree. There are
10 steps within each grade. If you are hired in a ladder position
(multiple grades advertised, such as 5/7/9) you can be hired at any of
these grades. I strongly encourage you to apply for all grades listed in
any vacancy announcement. Once hired, you have 1 year of probation at that
grade. If you succeed the first year, fully successful, you'll get a
promotion to the next step within that grade, or promoted to the next
grade, depending on your skills and performance demonstrated on the job.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. I'm also willing
to review your resume and give you feedback if requested. Your resume
needs to have every job you've held pertinent to the job (customer service
is demonstrated by the restaurant or retail job you had while in school),
including your supervisor and phone number as well as salary. Salary from
previous positions can influence what step you are hired in to at any given
grade. The salary range listed in these announcements starts with the base
salary and goes up to step 10 of the highest grade. Do not think you can
walk in the door at the top salary of any given grade unless you have at
least 1 year of experience doing the same kind of work at that higher
salary to be eligible for that higher salary.

In addition to the salary, remember, full retirement and health benefits,
annual and sick leave earned every 2 week, and holidays. Many schedules
can be flexible, specially during field season, as are opportunities for
teleworking, once you have demonstrated to your supervisor you can do some
of the work remotely.

Good luck, and have a great day!
Cindy
