Description and Presentations: Hazardous materials shipments are often overlooked when examining non-safety related freight transportation needs, but they contribute significantly to the economic vitality of the United States.  They are transported across the country every day by trucks, railroads, pipelines, barges, and airplanes, ensuring those hazmat products meet our everyday needs and petroleum products and biofuels continue to drive the U.S. economy forward.  The recent increases in U.S. shale oil and gas supplies have impacted the entire freight transportation system as more crude oil and natural gas are transported to refineries and export facilities. Pipelines and railroads transport large volumes of petroleum products, raw materials and chemicals to connect production facilities with refineries and terminals. Trucks transport refined petroleum to commercial and retail fuel stations in every state. Ships import and export fuels and chemicals to support both the United States’ and the world’s energy needs.

 

This webinar will discuss hazardous materials supply chains and the regulatory oversight required to ensure the labeling, packaging, shipping and storage of hazardous materials meet state and federal requirements.  Particular focus will be given during the webinar to both truck and rail shipments, which handle most of the hazmat shipments within the U.S.

This presentation will provide an overview of hazardous materials shipments in the United States and explore several hazmat supply chains involving petroleum and chemicals.

Railroad Perspective on Hazardous Materials Shipments

This presentation will discuss the types of hazmat goods rail carriers transport, which includes crude petroleum, ethanol, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals used to manufacture consumer goods.  It will also address the safety issues rail carriers need to deal with when they transport those goods.

FMCSA Perspective on Hazardous Materials Shipments

This presentation will examine the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA’s) initiatives to improve the roadway safety of hazmat shipments, including efforts to reduce rollover crashes, inspect cargo tanks, and generally promote the safe transportation of hazardous materials on U.S. highways.
