Geographers and Sustainers,

I met a visiting faculty member today, Ian McRae (cc’ed on this email), from UC Berkeley who is leading an interdisciplinary team of students to pursue the EPA Campus RainWorks 2018 contest. As a student Ian won 2nd place in this contest and as a faculty lead, his team won first place last year. You can see one of the products from their submission at https://youtu.be/yRmrjUIsyVw.

One of the major goals for the project is to develop a Master Plan for the campus to help reduce storm runoff and improve water quality for our community. This project will require a diverse set of students who have skills in sustainability, storm water, water quality, GIS, remote sensing, and more. If you are interested in applying the skills you’ve learned in class while working with a team of geographers, sustainers, engineers, and landscape architects and designers to help shape campus policy, this is an excellent opportunity.

Ian is hosting another recruiting and information meeting next Wednesday (9/12) in 103B of the Art and Architecture Building from 6-8 pm. After that, the team will meet regularly on Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm.

As an FYI, this is the sort of applied research that professional groups like TNGIC and the TN Association of Floodplain Managers love to see at their annual meetings. This would also be an excellent opportunity to develop a research project as part of the Eureca contest next spring.

Please reach out to Ian if you have questions.
