Reason for position

Vacancy due to retirement. The Cataloging/Metadata Librarian provides leadership and guidance in developing and maintaining the library's cataloging and metadata services. Cataloging/Metadata Librarian collaborates on reviewing and prioritizing projects, developing appropriate cataloging/metadata standards, quality control oversight, and database maintenance activities for the library catalog. Also participates in reference service, bibliographic instruction, and collection development/academic department liaison duties. This position reports to the Director of Library Services.

Description of Duties

  1. Performs original and copy cataloging, authority control and online catalog maintenance for resources in multiple formats and subject areas adhering to current cataloging/classification rules, guidelines and best practices. Maintains quality control of bibliographic, authority and item records in the library catalog
  2. Coordinates, prioritizes and monitors technical services functions. Provides leadership in planning, developing, implementing and monitoring of acquisitions/technical services policies and protocols. Assists with collection development.
  3. Conducts library instruction sessions, including serving as embedded course librarian, in cooperation with other librarians
  4. Performs all aspects of traditional and electronic reference services as well as occasional circulation desk support. Works at least one evening each week with occasional weekend hours possible.
  5. Participates in relevant college committees and projects as well as departmental meetings and activities.

Qualifications/Ratings

  1. Master’s degree accredited by the American Library Association
  2. Knowledge of current library cataloging processes and practices, including OCLC interfaces, MARC formats, Dublin Core, RDA, LC Classification and LCSH, and the ability to apply this knowledge in a practical setting enabling access to the library’s collections and resources
  3. Experience and/or training using an integrated library system (Alma by ExLibris preferred) for technical services functions
  4. Ability to design and deliver instruction in the use of library resources in individual and group settings and for placement on library website or campus course management system
  5. Knowledge of the library’s reference and instruction function, including knowledge of specialized searching skills and strategies, familiarity with the library’s print and electronic collections, and ability to translate those resources effectively to students, faculty and staff, and other patrons in a variety of delivery modes, including in person, in class, and through virtual reference
