Colleagues, on behalf of UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair Uday Vaidya:

You are warmly invited to attend the Open House of the Fibers and Composites Manufacturing (FCMF) facility with UT-ORNL leaders.

When: JULY 11th, Wednesday 4-–6 pm

Where: 1321 White Avenue on campus

Snacks and drinks will be provided. For more information please visit fcmf.utk.edu. Please feel free to reach out to FCMF Admin Vanina Ghossein ([log in to unmask]) for additional details and logistics.

Purpose:

There have been several administrative and organizational changes with the UT and ORNL system in the last two years. Hence, the basic purpose of this Open House is to:

(a)    Bring everyone up to speed on the collaborative efforts ongoing between UT, ORNL, MDF, IACMI, CFTF, and the TN manufacturing ecosystem,

(b)    Provide an opportunity for the graduate and undergraduate students to meet each of you and receive feedback – the tours and briefings will be led by the students,

(c)     Review the assets in place, plans/in the works and ongoing collaborations with the various entities, partnerships and industries, and

(d)    Provide live demonstrations of some key manufacturing processes and related work.

FCMF Background:

The advanced manufacturing ecosystem in growing exponentially in East Tennessee. The Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF) is part of the Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) and was formally inaugurated on August 26, 2015 as part of the TN manufacturing ecosystem. The FCMF team closely collaborates with the UT manufacturing-materials ecosystem, The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility/ORNL, the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility/ ORNL and the broad network of polymer and composite industries across the United States & beyond, and the East Tennessee Composites Coalition. IACMI - a Manufacturing USA institute is focused on high TRL R&D and applications development, with over 160 industry members.  The UT Composites team presently comprises ~15 graduate and over 20 undergraduate students in any given semester with 5 staff members. FCMF is engaged in large scale hybrid composites manufacturing innovation, extrusion-compression molding, resin transfer molding, advanced manufacturing for recycling composites into useful products, natural fibers leading to green products to name a few. Graduate and undergraduate students interface with industry and benefit from experiential learning and work force opportunities.  Several programs such as the NSF IUCRC, Bredesen Center, MEP, IACMI internship program etc. are integrated with FCMF. The work applies to DOE, DoD, NSF and other agency relationships, MDF, CFTF & other units of ORNL, IACMI projects, and other industry sponsored efforts. The facility continually engages in STEM activities, community colleges interactions and have a flexible business model to rapidly respond to industry needs.

Regards,

Christie
