The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries is a seeking a proactive and inquisitive reference librarian who thrives in a fast-paced environment for the reference team at Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences. The librarian in this position will serve as liaison to two nationally ranked schools in funding, biomedical research, education, and clinical care: the UAB Schools of Dentistry and Optometry.

Responsibilities for this position include building relationships with expert faculty and students to support the research and educational goals of both programs. Basic responsibilities involve: research consultations, customized group and individual instruction, high-level searching assistance, collection review, and general reference services, including in-person, phone, email, chat, and virtual reference support and some rotating weekend hours. The successful candidate is expected to participate in university and library committees and contribute to the profession to build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement. Other important attributes include: a strong customer focus, initiative, a willingness to learn, flexibility, creativity, and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This position is a full time, non-tenure-track faculty position with rank dependent on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Instructional Services. Salary is commensurate with experience with excellent fringe benefits, including TIAA.

Required Qualifications

·         Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school


Preferred Qualifications

·         Reference experience in an academic health sciences library
·         An undergraduate or advanced degree in physical, health, or life sciences
·         Demonstrated skill in teaching adult learners including graduate or professional students
·         Experience with innovative teaching methods and LibGuides
·         Experience searching biomedical literature databases including PubMed/MEDLINE
·         Experience with citation management software Knowledge of evidence-based practice,     systematic reviews, and academic publishing ·
·         Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
