If you haven't done so already, please make your arrangements to attend the 2018 Combined Annual Meetings of the USDA NC1186 and S1065 working groups in Carmel, CA on June 19-22. The $142 per night room rate that has been arranged
for us is valid only through May 17 and will return to the $238 per night standard rate thereafter. You must call the Carmel Mission Inn to make your room reservation at 1-800-803-6169 and use the USDA GROWER CONFERENCE group name to receive the arranged
room rate.

you will be attending so that I can be sure to arrange lunches and snacks for all of us.
I can't promise to provide ground transportation to Carmel, but please enter your flight information in the online form at

The agenda for the week is a full one. As we agreed, there is a grower conference in Watsonville on Tuesday June 19 followed by a grower tour on Wednesday June 20. The workgroup meetings occur on Thursday June 21 in Salinas at the
Monterey County Cooperative Extension facilities in Salinas. There is an optional tour on Friday June 22nd and in the morning we will be visiting various aspects of lettuce and broccoli production, harvesting, and packaging. In the afternoon, we'll go to
a fully mechanized orchid production facility. I am also trying to arrange for us to see field hydroponic strawberry production, a new method that addresses the inability to use soil fumigants. On Wednesday evening following the tour, Manuel Morales, owner
of Monterey Bay Nursery, has invited us for a barbecue at his place. His is well known in the area for his meals.
