About the Position and Responsibilities:

The Librarian for Geospatial Data and Systems is a member of the Office of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications in the Vanderbilt Libraries. Reporting to the Director of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications, the Librarian for Geospatial Data and Systems will take the lead in developing and supporting scholarly research that involves mapping and geospatial data. The Geospatial Librarian develops tools and platforms, trains students, faculty and staff to create and visualize geospatial data, and makes connections between GIS technologies, critical mapping, and academic disciplines across the university. The Geospatial Librarian works closely with liaison librarians to create tailored guides for geospatial approaches across disciplines and serves as a consultant on complex mapping or geospatial data questions. The Geospatial Librarian also provides research guidance and instructional support for faculty as well as the various centers on campus, including the Center for Teaching, Digital Humanities Center, Vanderbilt Institute for Digital Learning, and the Wond’ry, among others.

Lead GIS Instruction and Outreach for the Campus

-Consult with members of the university community about finding and analyzing geospatial data;

-Lead a weekly working group on GIS and regularly teach GIS workshops;

-Plan and coordinate library-wide GIS activities, services, and events;

-Serve as liaison to centers of geospatial work across campus.

Improve GIS Infrastructure and Support in the Library

-Develop methodologies for assessing the success of the geographic information system services (including census information) and identify means for improvement;

-Create and maintain a digital repository of geospatial data, including local as well as commercial, government, and other institutional data;

-Collaborate with library staff to enrich selected data sets with geospatial information.

Research and Development

-Present and publish regularly about the geospatial projects and services;

-Evaluate the relevance of new technologies for geospatial initiatives;

-Apply for grants to support emerging areas of service and research related to geospatial data and services.

Qualifications and Experience:

Master’s degree in library and information science, geospatial information systems, geography or related field.

Experience with implementing geospatial research; experience with the administration of centralized/enterprise GIS databases and web services, including ArcGIS Server.

Preferred experience with open source GIS software and tools, including Leaflet, Grass, QGis, GeoServer, and PostGIS. Knowledge of one or more programming languages, preferably JavaScript, Python, R or XQuery; background with linked data and the semantic web; expertise with manipulating data in CSV, JSON, and XML formats.
