LAC Federal is looking for an experienced Research and Reference Librarian to work at a major Federal Library in Beltsville, MD.  This role is to provide support for reference, research assistance, and instruction to the Agency and its customers. This is a long term role (initially for 9 months with 1 year renewal), full-time (40 hour a week; Monday - Friday) benefited position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Provide reference and research services in animal care, use and welfare (including 3Rs alternatives)

·         Participate in training new users on best practices for conducting literature searches, especially as they relate to 3Rs alternatives

·         Work collaboratively with the agency staff to document the process for handling literature search requests. 

·         Conduct thorough literature searches on request to Agency customers and for Agency projects.

·         In collaboration with the Agency staff, standardize materials for use in facilitating an Agency training course on meeting the information requirements of the Animal Welfare Act. This includes the following:

·         Write an instructor guide with both administrative and content instructions.

·         Standardize background templates and formatting of presentation and handout materials, implementing requirements detailed in the USDA visual standards and ensuring section 508 compliance during presentations and in web-based presentation.

·         Write participant guides/handouts, including materials such as course agendas, presentation materials, quick reference guides, etc. using plain language techniques.

·         Provide support to Agency staff during training programs. Support may include instruction to participants, facilitating learning exercises, setting up and tearing down the training space, and assisting with the registration process. Travel may be required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Master’s Degree in information or library science highly preferred. A Master’s degree in relevant field with 2-3 years’ experience working in a library may substitute for a library degree.

·         1-2 years’ experience specializing in animal science, biomedical research, zoology, biology, or veterinary science. Knowledge of animal health, care and welfare, particularly as these topics apply to laboratory animals, preferred. 

·         Practical knowledge of a wide range of techniques, methods, sources and procedures within the functional information area (e.g., database searching, reference, web site management and use of new and emerging technology tools to share information). Ability to effectively search and use the internet and bibliographic databases.

·         Ability to work alone and as part of a team and manage several tasks simultaneously.

·         Ability to organize thoughts and to express them clearly and concisely in both written and oral communication.

·         Knowledge of information management, thesauri, taxonomies, and the construction of bibliographies is essential.

·         Ability to meet strict standards for quality and compliance.
