“What does “middle management” mean in academic libraries?”

Abstract: The academic library middle manager role is little understood and understudied. Librarians are often asked to serve as managers, despite inadequate training and development in managerial competencies. In this talk, I will present results of a multi-method study which was conducted to better understand the librarian’s role as middle manager. This study included document analysis, psychometric scales, multiple-perspective interviews, and naturalistic observation. Findings revealed potential competency areas for LIS programs, library organizations, and middle managers themselves.

Erick Patillo has focused her research on organizational behavior, assessment and academic library middle managers. She earned a MSLS and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA from Old Dominion University in Music History.

Cheers,
Diane
