Cataloging Specialist - Technical Services Library
Assistant
General Description:
The Cataloging Specialist performs cataloging, classification, maintenance and
physical processing of materials of all types and formats using the library’s integrated system. Collaborates in the creation and completion of departmental reports and statistics. Performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Classification:
The Cataloging Specialist maintains the integrity of the library’s on-line catalog and resolves problems related to all formats and types of library materials. Physically
receives and handles initial processing of all formats of materials purchased by or donated to the library. The
staff member in this position shall have knowledge of library procedures and services and will possess the ability to be involved in departmental cross-training, planning
and workflow implementation. Work is performed under general direction from the Technical Services Manager. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in managing the assigned areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of basic bibliographic practices and copy cataloging. Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
system. Ability to maintain complex statistical records. Ability to make a varied, balanced collection of books, periodicals, and other materials available to children and adults through consistent meeting of annual processing goals. Considerable knowledge
of library routine and procedures in the area of assignment. Possesses effective interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of the practical application of computer operations, procedures, and Microsoft Office or similar open source office suites.
Preferred Experience and Education:
A bachelor's degree in information science or similar field with 2-3 years of professional experience in an academic or public library in technical services with copy
cataloging (AACR2, RDA and MARC standards) and integrated library system (ILS) experience in SirsiDynix Symphony or Ex Libris Alma is preferred. Supervisory and policy/procedure experience is also preferred. Bachelor’s degree and one year of professional library
experience or an associate degree and 2-3 years of professional library experience is required.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed without
exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.
