The attached paper may be of interest to those of you interested in working
with rare and imperiled creatures. If you are not aware, the Center for
Biological Diversity settled their lawsuit with the US Fish and Wildlife
Service for the Service's failure to take action under the ESA for over 600
candidate species, most of which are in the SE. The Service came up with
the Species Status Assessment Process and the attached paper, soon to be
published, describes that process.

Good Morning.

I am sending a link to a new paper on the SSA process that will be
published in the Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management.

This provides an overview of the SSA Process and uses two examples to
illustrate the process.

We did it! An early online version of -
Development of a Species Status Assessment Process for Decisions under the
U.S. Endangered Species Act - is at the link below.

I do hope that in the time it has taken us to respond to lots of peer
reviewers thoughts and recommendations we have produced a document that
helpful for you in understanding the framework and for people outside of
FWS to understand it too. Having our process peer reviewed and published
is a really big deal so I am thrilled that although it has taken over a
year to get this done, it is now done!

the pdf is here

Because this is peer reviewed and published be sure to site it in your
SSAs! alternatively site the manuscript and the fws framework.

SPECIAL thanks to the authors David Smith, Nathan L Allan, Conor P McGowan,
Jennifer Szymanski, Susan R Oetker, and Heather M Bell. With a special
shout out to Dave who has spent considerable time over the last year
shepherding this manuscript around!

*YOU ALL* are part of this manuscript. Without our early adopters we
wouldn't have gotten started, without continued application of the
framework we would not have improved our messaging, without the development
of the course we wouldn't have gotten so specific, and all of you who had
things to say about the framework, well you made it better!!!

Congratulations to all, h

SEND THIS AROUND!!!!!!!
