This relates specifically to College savings and planning. The new tax bill that passed earlier this year rewrites the tax code in many ways, eliminating deductions and adding new benefits. Some of these new provisions affect those paying for college <https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college>. *What stays the same*: 1. The new tax bill keeps the deduction for student loan interest <https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/2016-03-17/pay-up-to-625-less-in-tax-from-a-student-loan-deduction> 2. The tuition waivers that graduate students <https://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-graduate-schools/paying> receive will stay tax free 3. Other tax credits <https://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/student-loan-ranger/2014/02/19/4-higher-education-tax-benefits-families-should-know-about> – such as the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit – remain unscathed. *What changes will affect families and students who are financing higher education*: 1. Deductions for interest on home equity loans and lines of credit are eliminated 2. Families can use 529 plans to pay for K-12 education 3. Colleges and universities will pay a new excise tax on endowments 4. Student loans discharged for death or disability are now tax-exempt 5.
