Dear Undergraduate Geographers:

 

Dr. Dan Sui, Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University and Director of the Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES) at the U.S. National Science Foundation, will be our 2018 Ralston Speaker.  Dr. Sui’s visit is funded by the Ralston Family Fund with donations from Dr. Bruce Ralston’s brother and his family members.  Dr. Sui will be on our campus on February 8-9, 2018 and will deliver two presentations and have meetings with faculty and students.  All of you are invited to meet with Dr. Sui at an open meeting, with pizzas and drinks, at 12 noon – 1:30 pm on Friday, February 9th, in Burchfiel Geography Building Room 406.  Dr. Sui’s two presentations are:

A brief bio of Dr. Dan Sui is included below for your reference:

 

Daniel Sui is an Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor and Professor of Geography, Public Affairs, Public Health, and Urban/Regional Planning at the Ohio State University (OSU).  Since July 2016, he has been on an IPA assignment to serve as the Division Director for Social and Economic Sciences (SES) at the U.S. National Science Foundation.  Prior his current appointment, Daniel Sui served as Chair of Geography (2011-2015) and as Director of the Center for Urban & Regional Analysis (CURA) (2009-2012) at OSU.  He holds a B.S. (1986) and M.S. (1989) from Peking University and Ph.D. from University of Georgia (1993).  His research current interests cover issues related to robust and reliable practices in spatially integrated social sciences and humanities, human dynamics in smart & connected cities, and location-based social media.  Daniel Sui was a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow, 2014 Google Faculty Fellow, and 2014 recipient of the distinguished scholar award from the Association of American Geographers. Sui was also the 2015 Public Policy Scholar in residence at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.  More information about Sui’s current research can be found at: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Daniel_Sui.
