Hello students!
This could be you, collecting data and sampling sediments from local lakes!
With the help of generous folks at the University of Tennessee and in our community, I am making plans for field trips to several lakes in the Knoxville area, as part of my course,
Geography 431: Environmental History from Lake Sediments. During these field trips we will collect surface samples and cores of lake sediment, as the student is doing in the photo above.
Did you know that much of what we know about past climate change, fire history, shifts in vegetation, and human impacts on the environment is based on the study of the sediments or mud at the bottoms of lakes? Lake sediment
is also key for understanding recent environmental pollution.
Geography 431 is a new, hands-on course with two one-hour lectures and one two-hour lab each week. All of the reading is online, with no textbook to buy. The course fits in the "Landscapes and Environment" and "Climate
and Climate Change" concentrations in the Geography major, and it is also part of several Arts and Sciences "Connections Packages."
Join us for hands-on science focusing on the secrets in lake mud!
Sincerely,
Sally Horn
