Subject: [EPC-FACULTY] FW: 3MT - Three Minute Thesis Competition

Hi all, while this has gone out to students in CEHHS, I think that Jeff Fairbrother makes a good point below in this email that students might not read the blast email – so please consider encouraging your advisees to this competition. Thanks. Jeff

Subject: 3MT - Three Minute Thesis Competition

All,

The Graduate School is once again holding the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Please see the attachment for details. This year CEHHS can send six students to the semifinal round, which will be held sometime during the weeks of Feb 26 and Mar 5. The finals will be held on April 6 during Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week.

We need to identify our entrants by January 17, 2018. Given the short turn-around time, we will run our college-level selection process as we did last year. Students will submit a copy of their slide, a 250-word abstract, and a 3-minute video. If we receive more than six entries, I will assemble an ad hoc committee to evaluate the video presentations.

We have not been given details about any possible monetary awards. I will share that information as soon as I receive it.

Here is a draft of the college-wide email we will send out today:

Dear CEHHS Colleagues,

Please help us spread the word about the upcoming Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition that will be held during Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week (April 2-6, 2018).

The final round of the competition will include 12 graduate/professional students from across campus. Competitors have three-minutes and a single slide to communicate their research to a lay audience. More details about eligibility, rules, and the format of the competition can be found at https://gradschool.utk.edu/training-and-mentorship/3mt-three-minute-thesis-competition/.

To identify finalists, four semifinal rounds will be hosted by various UT colleges. CEHHS is partnering with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the College of Law to host one of the semifinals in late February or early March.

CEHHS can send six (6) students to compete in this semifinal round, so our first task is to identify interested students and select the six who will represent us. Please encourage graduate/professional students you know to consider applying. This is a good opportunity to improve their presentation skills and a great way to promote the wonderful work we are doing in the college.

To apply, students need to submit the following by 9:00 am, January 12:

1. A copy of their slide
2. A 250 word abstract of their presentation
3. A 3-minute video clip of their presentation

These materials must be submitted via email to Kayla Whitt ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) in formats that are compatible with review on a PC compatible computer running Microsoft Office programs. Students who are selected to represent the college in the semifinal round will be notified no later than January 19, which will give them approximately five weeks to improve their slides and polish their presentations.

Please share this information with graduate/professional students in your departments.

Please encourage your faculty members to help us recruit participants. Students might not read blast emails until they return for the semester, so personal contact from advisors will be helpful. Last year, one of our students won the grand prize! Also, please help us promote the final event. All of the presentations were impressive and it was a great to see UTK students in action.

Thanks,

Jeff
