The School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tennessee Knoxville seeks an IT specialist whose responsibilities include: Web development and maintenance (40%), information technology support (35%), instruction (15%), and planning and advising (10%). The successful applicant will create, manage and maintain a user-friendly and contemporary website, including its design and layout, information architecture, and back-end functionality. The successful applicant will develop and integrate web forms, databases and other interactive functionality into the website, develop and test the website using standard usability methods and practices, and implement best practices with respect to security, privacy, and universal design. The successful applicant will plan, evaluate, design, purchase, deploy and maintain information technologies to serve curricular, student, faculty, and staff needs, and develop work flows, documentation and systems to improve routine operations and record-keeping. The successful applicant will provide technology instruction to students, staff and faculty, both in-person and online, and create instructional materials and solutions for routine technical questions and problems. Finally, the successful applicant will assist, plan and anticipate technological needs with College-level IT administration, and advise the SIS director on technology needs for SIS.

Competencies and Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of multiple operating systems and software packages. Ability to maintain, configure and monitor computer systems, including servers. Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair application and operating system software, hardware, and peripherals. Ability to effectively design and implement cross-platform, network computing solutions. Extensive knowledge of office productivity software, especially Microsoft Office products.

Advanced understanding of content management systems; web 2.0 features, functions and standards; user interface design; and universal design. Expertise with the design, implementation and maintenance of Web-based applications and databases, and with languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and Python. Advanced understanding of the principles of information architecture, user-centered design, and online usability best practices and methods, including assessment and analysis. Understanding of online security and privacy principles and practices.

Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to persons with a wide range of technical skills and understanding. Excellent organizational, project management, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong attention to detail required. Must enjoy interacting with, and helping others. Adaptable, flexible, reliable, creative. Excellent team player and problem-solver. Strong analytical skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize. Highly motivated self-starter.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Education: B.S./B.A. degree. Master's degree in relevant area a plus.

Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of IT and Web development experience. Experience with planning, evaluating, designing, purchasing, configuring, deploying and maintaining information technologies, systems and networks. Experience with content management systems, in particular Drupal and Word Press. Experience with principles and practices of user-centered design and usability. Extensive experience with office productivity software, especially Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint and Access, as well as desktop publishing software.
