Pellissippi State Community College is a seeking a full-time Reference Librarian for the Hardin Valley campus in Knoxville, TN.

POSITION SUMMARY
Provide reference services to students, faculty, and others in-person, by telephone, and via online chat; provide individualized research consultation; provide outreach and service to the distance learning community; participate collaboratively with colleagues and faculty to develop, promote, and provide library instruction and information literacy; participate in collection development for print and electronic materials.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
30% Provide reference service and research assistance to library users in-person and remotely using print and electronic information sources. Provide individual appointments for library research either in-person or by electronic means. Coordinate the staffing of the Reference Desk.

25% Provide instruction to individuals and to groups in classroom or workshop settings. Design classes and workshops. Create instructional guides in print and electronic formats; develop tutorials and other instructional aids in any useful medium to facilitate learning. Assist classroom faculty in the development of library assignments and subject guides for their classes and in the use of other library resources. Coordinate the scheduling of classroom presentations and workshops.

15 % Participate in collection development activities to build a strong collection of both print and digital library resources. Evaluate and make recommendations concerning the selection and implementation of new technologies to enhance reference services and library instruction. Serve as liaison to faculty in assigned subject areas and programs of distance education to establish cooperative efforts and one-on-one communication.

10% Promote library services through social media, and web services.

5% Supervise and coordinate the activities of bibliographic instructors, clerical assistants and student employees; assist in hiring and participate in performance review as appropriate.

5% Plan, coordinate and perform the gathering of statistics for reference and bibliographic instruction activities, report results on a regular basis; use data gathered to plan coverage and instructional activities. Design forms and provide training to others to track activities.

5% Serve on college committees and task forces as a member of the faculty or as a representative of the library. Use professional knowledge and skills to contribute to college and community projects and activities.

3% Keep abreast of and make contributions to, professional literature, activities of professional organizations, and scholarly developments in the areas of reference, library instruction, and instructional technology.

2% Participate in regular staff meetings and regular meetings with supervisors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A.      MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program at time of appointment

B.      One year previous reference and bibliographic instructional activities or concentration of MLS degree courses in reference and bibliographic instruction preferred.

C.      Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal and coordination skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND WORK CHARACTERISITICS

A.      Experience with and strong commitment to reference service and library instruction.

a.       Demonstrated knowledge of instructional techniques to educate individuals and groups in effective and efficient methods of conducting library research and effective use of library resources.

b.       Demonstrated knowledge of reference interview, reference sources, classification system, indexes and abstracts.

c.       Ability to plan and execute effective search strategies for complex or extended reference questions and for written handouts.

d.       Ability to design and write bibliographies and other library resource documents to assist users.

e.       Ability to design, perform, and evaluate instructional content and programs for distance and traditional classrooms, including discussion with faculty member goals of bi session, preparing outlines, list of sources, exercises and objectives of session.

f.        Ability to apply learning theories and technologies to the design and implementation of a variety of online learning objects to enhance current and future online and traditional classroom instruction sessions.

g.       Ability to design procedures to gather statistical information and their application to improve reference and instruction services.

h.       Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends.


B.      Experience working with users from diverse backgrounds with a wide variance of information-seeking skills and technical competence.

a.       Demonstrated ability to convey an attitude of service and manner that encourages users to seek assistance.

b.       Ability to explain services and policies to users whenever appropriate.

c.       Ability to collaborate with faculty outside the library to promote and integrate information literacy into the classroom.


C.      Experience with electronic information services and library systems and their applications for reference and instruction.

a.       Ability to stay abreast and encourage the use of current knowledge and emerging trends in reference and information fields.

b.       Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environments.

c.       Working knowledge of marketing through social media.


D.      Experience with web page design and development for desktops and mobile devices.

a.       Working knowledge of current and emerging web applications.


E.       Knowledge of collection development processes to assess and select resources in a variety of appropriate formats for subjects taught at the college.


F.       Ability to write, maintain and administer policies and procedures.


G.      Ability to coordinate activities and communicate these needs in a cordial manner, with a variety of personnel (supervisor, colleagues, student workers, other department employees, faculty, administrative staff, college support staff, and vendors).
