Physical Oceanography Post-Doctoral Researcher
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), Stony Brook University
Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA

Integrated Statistics is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher (PR) to work with an interdisciplinary team of physical oceanographers and fisheries scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), and Stony Brook University. The PR will work on a collaborative project funded by the NOAA Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) Program to develop and evaluate a seasonal-to-interannual statistical forecasting system for oceanographic conditions and living marine resources on the Northeast U.S. Shelf (NES).

The NES Large Marine Ecosystem supports some of the most commercially valuable fisheries in the world and has experienced dramatic ecosystem change in response to fishing pressure, climate variability and climate change, the combined effects of which create a huge challenge for fisheries stock assessment in this region. Incorporating physical environmental variables into stock assessment population models and subsequent forecasts could improve model performance and reduce uncertainty in future population size. This project aims to develop and test a new statistical seasonal-to-interannual prediction system for ocean temperatures on the NES, specifically tailored to the needs of NOAA Fisheries stock assessments. The primarily goals will be: (1) to use previously described statistical relationships linking shelf ocean temperature to various basin-scale and local variability, e.g. North Atlantic Oscillation, Gulf Stream path, and coastal sea-level, to develop a prediction system at the 3–36 month time scale; (2) to evaluate this system in the context of selected stock assessments executed by NOAA Fisheries; and (3) to clarify the dynamical basis for the statistical relationships using ocean hindcast models and coupled ocean-atmosphere models.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree (or near-completed) in a relevant discipline, such as Physical Oceanography, Fisheries Science, Statistics, Ecology, or other related field.
  • Understanding of coastal circulation and its relationship to large-scale climate variability in the Northwest Atlantic is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with statistical modeling and statistical analyses of large observational data and numerical model simulations is also preferred but not required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced preferably through publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations to a variety of audiences.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Aquaculture Internship
Reef Doctor
South-West Madagascar

The Aquaculture Internship offers the opportunity to join our experienced international aquaculture team, assisting in the development and expansion of our Darwin Initiative-funded Alternative Livelihoods Programme for the Vezo communities of the Bay of Ranobe.

The objective of this project is to provide communities with the tools, resources, and support to develop a sustainable aquaculture program with the capacity of providing guaranteed market access, food security, economic growth, and wealth for rural impoverished fishing communities.

This internship allows people with a keen interest in aquaculture and social development, but with limited experience, to gain their first steps in this exciting yet demanding field. There are 2, 3, and 6-month internship positions, spaces are limited to 2–4 people per expedition, three times a year.  PADI dive training (from PADI Open Water up to Divemaster level) can also be provided at an additional cost.

Following an initial training period (first month), interns become a valuable member of the aquaculture team, helping to implement, expand, and monitor seaweed and sea cucumber aquaculture activities across the bay. Waking up to the sandy beaches in front of our project site provides an idyllic lifestyle, as does watching the sun set over the lagoon every evening. The conditions aren’t five star, but living simply, next to a traditional Malagasy fishing community, is an incredible life experience.

Parties interested in hosting and organizing IIFET 2020, or a future conference, are asked to submit a written proposal by March 1, 2018. Proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Committee from March-April 2018; supplementary materials or clarifications may be requested by the ExCom by email or telephone, in an iterative process. The goal is to select the best candidate by May 2018, and to hold a signing ceremony and make an official announcement at the IIFET 2018 conference in Seattle, Washington, USA, July 16-20, 2018. Webinar - "The Business Case for Land Rights: Private Sector Perspectives on Responsible Land-Based Investment"
Microlinks, Agrilinks, and LandLinks
Online: anywhere

USAID LandLinks is working to support private sector partners to de-risk investments and secure legitimate land rights in order to improve livelihoods and other outcomes for communities affected by investments. Join, along with Agrilinks, Microlinks, and a panel of experts, for an interactive online discussion on the Business Case for Land Rights: Private Sector Perspectives on Responsible Land-Based Investment.

Secure, clear land rights are critical for sustainable land-based investments. But in the developing world, where an estimated 70 percent of land is unregistered, it can be challenging to understand who has legitimate land and resource rights, and land grabs and land rights abuses are often associated with commercial investments.

Featuring USAID partners, The Hershey Company and ECOM Agroindustrial Corporation, this webinar will explore how these companies think about and address land tenure risks in their supply chains. This group will also delve into why and how these two companies are working with USAID to mitigate land tenure risks for their suppliers and increase cocoa yields in Ghana. Olga Gormalova (ECOM) and Jeff King (Hershey’s) will be speaking, with Sarah Lowery (USAID) moderating.

In addition, look for sessions designated as "The Road to Brasilia: Preparation for the 8th World Water Forum." The 8th World Water Forum will convene in March 2018 in Brazil and AWRA will host discussions and presentations in the areas of water and energy, climate change adaptation, and integrated water resources management.

The 2017 conference committee has developed a program with a focus on students, young professionals, and the young at heart. A fun run along the Columbia River will get your heart pumping before the Tuesday sessions. The student competition and the FREE young professionals speed networking event are also returning to Portland. Water as portrayed in art and photography will be on display (oils and photography) on Monday and Tuesday of the conference. April Waters, conference artist-in-residence will exhibit her oil paintings of water scenes in the Pacific Northwest. Photographers Timothy Palmer (a guest speaker), Kevin Coulton and Gary Whitton will be displaying their photography as well. And, AWRA's main social event will take place in downtown at the newly opened Portland Food Hall, featuring Portland's famous food carts and local beverages.

During Tuesday's Lunch 'n' Learn, celebrated authors Bill and Rosemarie Alley will share their new book, High and Dry: Meeting the Challenges of the World's Growing Dependence on Groundwater. Join us for their lecture, Q&A, and book signing. During Thursday's Lunch 'n' Learn, Professors Adell Amos and Bill Jaeger will present findings from a multi-year NSF-grant project Willamette Water 2100. See what some of the brightest lights in Pacific Northwest water predict what the region will look like in the year 2100.

Portland awaits - AWRA is looking forward to seeing you there!
