Topic: International Urban Freight (I-NUF) Conference Presentations – Examining and Addressing Urban Goods Movement Needs

Registration: https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description and Presentations: Freight transportation issues and needs often have a particularly significant impact in urban areas.  Urban areas are often the locations for manufacturing, distribution, or commercial retail-related freight generators.  Perhaps even more significantly, urban areas are almost always significant freight transportation destination locations, due to the high volume of freight products used and consumed in those areas.  The high volumes of freight transportation activity that takes place in urban areas and the need to better understand the needs and impacts of urban freight movements has inspired a significant amount of research on urban freight transportation.  One of the leading centers for urban freight transportation research, the METRANS Transportation Center in southern California, sponsors an every-other year international conference focused on presenting research in the urban freight transportation field.  This webinar will include three presentations given at the 2017 METRANS International Urban Freight Conference.  The three presentations will particularly focus on challenges with urban freight transportation and delivery challenges and how better understanding attributes such as business freight delivery needs, municipal parking and zoning regulations, and urban street design can better allow transportation planners to address urban goods movements within their communities.

“Industry Impacts of Urban Area Freight Access”

This presentation will examine some of the challenges freight companies, particularly carriers, face that reduce accessibility for urban area freight access, and discuss how addressing these issues can benefit both freight companies and the regional and/or national economy as a whole.

SPEAKER:

“Urban Freight Initiatives: State of the Art and State of the Practice”

This presentation will discuss some of the methods that can be used to enhance urban freight movements, including some recent research examining which of these methods are most utilized and most beneficial.

SPEAKER:

“The Final 50 Feet of the Urban Goods Delivery System”

This presentation will talk about the issues and needs associated with actual freight deliveries in urban areas, i.e. the last 50 feet, particularly curbside deliveries to commercial businesses and of e-commerce shipments.
