*PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: *The purpose of this classification is to perform
a variety of tasks related to Library patron services.  Duties include, but
are not limited to: sorting; shelving; answering patron inquiries; working
the public service desk; and performing additional duties as assigned by
the Library Branch Manager, Library Resource Sharing Coordinator,
Circulation Supervisor, Children’s Room Manager, or Central Library Manager.



*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:* *The following duties are normal for this position.
These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties
may be required and assigned. *Works public service desk; enters new users
into the patron database; charges and discharges items; performs all
necessary functions to maintain accurate and up-to-date patron database.  The
Sights & Sounds position will only work with the public service desk.
Assists patrons (parents and children) in using the public access catalog
and in locating information and/or materials through use of the automated
system or online catalog.  The Lawson McGhee Circulation position will
assist patrons in locating materials through the use of the automated
system. Pulls reserved materials from shelves to be sent to other agencies;
checks in reserved materials received through courier delivery; resolves
related problems. Collects fines and/or other charges; prepares daily
deposits for the Library Business Administrator; makes change as necessary.
(This sentence does not apply to the Sights & Sounds position.) Provides
Library patron with information via telephone conversations or face-to-face
contact. Prepares books and materials for shelving; includes unloading,
discharging and sorting tasks; shelves items Reads shelves to ensure that
books and/or media are correctly shelved and correct errors. Maintains
photocopiers and/or printers by refilling paper trays, changing toner
cartridges, and assisting patron in proper handling/usage, clearing paper
jams, etc. Assists patrons with the use of the Self-Check Machines. (This
does not apply to Children’s Room or Sight & Sounds positions.) Processes
new books and other materials.   (This does not apply to Children’s Room or
Sight & Sounds positions.)



*ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:* The Interlibrary Loan position will use Unicorn
Automated System to locate material in KCPL collections, pull books from
the shelves as necessary, handles shipment of materials to/from other
libraries. The Sights & Sound position also pulls reserved media materials
from shelves to be sent to other agencies; resolves related problems.  Uses
RTI disc check machine to resurface CD’s and DVD’s; prepares them for
cataloging. The Children’s Room position also assists parents and children
in using public computers, including the reservation system, internet
access, software applications, printing; resolves related problems.  Designs,
creates, and hangs decorations and departmental signage; creates thematic
displays.  Plans and conducts story-times and/or children[s programs and
activities in the Library and as needed in other locations using books,
flannel boards, CD players and puppets.  Executes daily opening/closing
procedures for department.  Conducts library tours and presentations.  Provides
reference services to parents and children by answering in-depth reference
questions requiring knowledge of specialist resources and children’s
literature.  The Library Branches position also assists patrons in using
public computers, including the reservation system, internet access,
software applications, printing, and troubleshooting.  Plans and conducts
story-times. The Lawson McGhee Circulation position also creates weekly New
Book list for use by the Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper.  Processes

* PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:* The purpose of this classification is to
perform general page services for Library users and staff.  Duties may
involve, but are not limited to:  sorting and shelving books, media
materials and periodicals; assisting with unloading book drop by sorting
and discharging; reading shelves to ensure that materials are shelved
correctly; and performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.



*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:* *The following duties are normal for this position.
These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties
may be required and assigned. *Unloads book drop and/or courier delivery
bags by sorting, discharging and routing a variety of materials to
appropriate agencies/departments. Sensitizes book for security purposes;
sorts and arranges alphabetically and/or by Dewey classification, shelves
books and other materials. Locates, traps and distributes holds; resolves
related problems. Communicates with the public via telephone, e-mail, fax
or in person; provides general information; directs calls, e-mails, or
inquires as appropriate. Assists at public desk, which may include issuing
library cards, entering new users into database, accessing patron
information, charging and discharging material, collecting fines and/or
other charges, making change. Assists patrons in locating materials, using
print and online magazines and newspapers, and using the public access
database. Retrieves patron requests for magazines, newspapers and microfilm
reels from the Periodicals collection and non-public areas. Assists patrons
with the use of computers, microfilm readers, photocopiers, etc. Manages
collection of magazines and/or newspapers. Makes photocopies from books,
files microfilm, microfiche, etc., as requested by researchers; verifies
requests with researchers when written information is unclear. Files
microfilm boxes, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, obituaries, and other
materials. Reads shelves to ensure that materials are correctly shelved and
corrects errors, withdraws damaged, worn or outdated materials from the
collection. Performs craft-oriented tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Performs occasional cleaning duties as needed. Uses RTI disk check machine
to resurface CDs and DVDs; uses RTI video check to examine videotapes for
damage.



*ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:* Checks computer print-outs against shelves.
Checks shelves for books having been reported as returned and/or placed on
HOLD. Shift book sections and/or straighten books on shelves as necessary.
Assists researchers in the McClung Collection with registration, security
clearance procedures, and simple reference questions. Responds to and
reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office
supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County
Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.



*MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:* Successful completion of at least
two (2) years of coursework in a standard high school and at least 16 years
of age; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and
experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities
for this position.

*SCHEDULE: * Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday in
rotation, one evening a week.

*PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:* The purpose of this classification is to
provide accurate answers to specific questions, research assistance and/or
appropriate referrals to meet the informational needs of Knox County
citizens.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  instructing the public
and staff in the use of Library’s on line catalog and reference databases;
instructing the public in the use of other computer applications such as,
internet and Microsoft office; and performing additional duties assigned by
the Library Reference Services Manager.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:* *The following duties are normal for this
position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned. *Provides answers to specific
questions, research assistance and/or appropriate referrals to meet the
informational needs of Knox County citizens. Conducts reference interviews
with people of various social, economic and educational levels via
telephone, letter, e-mail and in person. Identifies the information need,
matches it to the appropriate print or online resource and evaluates the
transaction for customer satisfaction. Instructs the public and staff
on-one-on or in a classroom setting in the use of the Library’s online
catalog, reference databases, the internet and other computer software.
Assists in building and maintaining the Library’s collection, especially
the online information provided via the Library’s information portal.
Conducts Library tours, speaks to community groups about Library topics,
represents the Library at meetings of community groups, serves on Library
committees and tasks groups as needed.

*ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS**: *Assigned to one or more specialized tasks
within the Reference Department. Responds to and reports immediately if
called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a
coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health.
Performs other related duties as required.

*MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:* Master’s Degree in Library Science
or Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; with
three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in
a Library environment, or related field; or any equivalent combination of
education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge,
skills, and abilities for this position.
