Department Head of Archives Research Center

POSITION SUMMARY:

Are you interested in working with the staff of an award-winning library?  Then consider the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library, winner of the 2016 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.  Our organizational culture is represented by a staff of engaged and highly motivated individuals and is one in which entrepreneurial thinking is encouraged.  To continue our excellence in program and services, the library is seeking an innovative, driven leader, to serve as the Library’s Department Head of the Archives Research Center.   Employing excellent leadership skills, the Department Head will advance activities associated with the department’s vision of being a premier destination archives connecting the local community and the world to the rich historical and cultural resources at the Atlanta University Center.  In this position, the Head will manage the strategic and day to day operations for the department, to include collection and development of acquisitions, access and preservation of collections, recruitment and retention of staff, grant writing and grants management, support of teaching and instruction, and outreach initiatives.  The Head will foster strategic relations with donors, encourage relevant technological advancements, collaborate with other Library departments and area archives, and lead the promotion of resources within the Archives Research Center.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Provide day to day management of the Archives Research Center

·         Lead the development of planning and efforts to achieve department goals and objectives

·         Manage department budgeting process

·         Evaluate the department’s performance

·         Cultivate donor relationships

·         Contribute to the advancement of practices and knowledge within the field of archival management

·         Oversee formulation of  plans for physical and intellectual control and preservation of collections

·         Manage collection development and maintenance of print monographs

·         Develop applicable policies and procedures

·         Lead development of strategies for outreach, including publications, presentations, programs, and library exhibits

·         Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate staff

·         Assist with efforts to seek external funding opportunities for the department, write and manage grant projects

·         Participate in AUC and library-wide initiatives, committees and task forces

·         Collaborate with AUC faculty and other library and archives managers to promote the use of archival resources

·         Serve as a resource on copyright issues related to archival materials

·         Actively participate in professional, local, regional, and/or national archival associations

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Graduate degree from an accredited program in an appropriate discipline  (Archives Management, Library and Information Science)

·         Formal archival training

·         Minimum of three years relevant experience in archives

·         2-4 years supervisory experience

·         Experience in planning, organizing, and supervising projects and the work of others

·         Experience with applications of technology relevant to archives management (such as ArchivesSpace) and digital preservation

·         Experience providing reference and instructional services

·         Grant writing experience desirable

·         Demonstrated knowledge of current trends, standards, and practices of archival services in academic libraries

·         Understanding of digitization practices and applications in archives

·         Familiarity with records management policy and standards

·         Evidence of scholarship and/or professional activity

·         Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a fast paced environment

·         Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster a collegial work environment where change and innovation are encouraged

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills

·         Excellent organizational and analytical skills

The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.  Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center. 

 

The Archives Research Center at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library has a collection documenting the African American experience and the African Diaspora.  It features archives of the Atlanta University Center institutions, manuscript writings, digital collections and exhibits, and books – including first edition titles, limited printings autographed and rare publications.  The extensive collection of books, personal papers, organizational and institutional records supports research in education, literature, the arts, religion, politics and society and community empowerment.  This archival repository includes more than 8,500 linear feet of collection and is the custodian of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection.
