Position Summary:

Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks creative and enthusiastic applicants for the position of Digital Learning & Design Librarian, with a liaison area to the College of Natural Resources & Environment. Working widely across the library system and the University, this position presents an opportunity to contribute to the production of digital content that will be used in a variety of different program areas, while also exploring emerging trends in digital learning. While the core duties of this position will revolve around designing, developing, and implementing various types of instruction as well as contributing to our first year instruction program, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage as a liaison for an active College that is home to Fish & Wildlife Conservatory, Geography, Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Biomaterials. In this role, the liaison will serve as a connector to other experts in the Libraries and around campus, including GIS/Remote Sensing, Data Services, and Scholarly Communications. This position also provides the opportunity to be strongly embedded in instructional courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and may include opportunities to teach credit bearing online courses.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Director, Teaching & Learning Engagement The Digital Learning & Design Librarian will be responsible for:
- Engaging in opportunities to design, develop, and evaluate digital learning experiences for foundational and upper level courses, including contributing to the vision and implementation of various key initiatives (Digital Literacy, ePortfolio, Learning Design Studio and the Odyssey Learning Object Repository)
- Partnering with academic faculty, library faculty, and other key stakeholders to gather requirements for content development, write scripts, develop storyboards, and produce digital content and other instructional materials
- Collaborating with others across the library units, Colleges and other university stakeholders to creatively transform existing text-based content, web pages and online guides into effective and engaging online learning objects using a wide range of software and technologies
- Working collaboratively to strategize teaching and learning at University Libraries
- Working collaboratively to ensure a consistent quality of digital learning objects and other teaching and learning resources from University Libraries and serving as a resource to other librarians who provide instruction on designing and incorporating digital learning materials into their workshops, courses and other learning opportunities
- Cultivating partnerships with members of the Virginia Tech community by reaching out to and engaging with faculty, staff, and students in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, including collaboratively leading an ePortfolio pilot
- Providing customized consultations for faculty and students in the College of Natural Resources and Environments
- Assisting with the development, evaluation, maintenance, and promotion of collections for the College of Natural Resources and Environments
- Participating in various continuing education and professional development opportunities in order to continually evolve his or her instructional and professional practice

Required Qualifications:

- ALA accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree
- Broad knowledge and understanding of instruction, pedagogy, and principles related to information and other literacies
- Ability to teach foundational instruction workshops and to contribute to the mission and vision of the unit and the University Libraries
- Understanding of current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in instructional technology, digital pedagogy and digital learning spaces
- Willingness to learn production technologies, with proficiency in at least one web-based technology (i.e., Camtasia, iMovie, Storyline or Adobe Creative)
- Strong interpersonal skills related to outreach, relationship building, and collaboration
- Ability to work as part of a team in order to accomplish departmental and institutional goals in a fast-paced, energetic environment
- Demonstrated learner-oriented approach to instruction and other library services
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning
- Demonstrated willingness to explore new and emerging librarian roles that reflect growing trends in the field, to including teaching ePortfolio and digital literacy workshops, particularly in assigned liaison areas

 

Preferred Qualifications:

- A science background or undergraduate major in a science related discipline
- Experience or academic coursework related to digital learning, instructional and/or educational technologies or creation of digital learning materials
- Experience or coursework related to assessment of instructional initiatives
- Experience with the application of pedagogical practices related to blended and online learning
- Experience delivering instruction and outreach
- Evidence of successful project management skills
