Job and Funding Announcements

Washington State - The Department of Ecology:  is recruiting for an Aquatic Pesticide Permitting Specialist (Environmental Specialist 5) in the Water Quality Program. This position serves as the senior program expert on aquatic plant and animal control. This position advises agency management, other agencies, permittees, and the public regarding aquatic plant and animal control and management, and serves as the senior permit writer for aquatic pesticide use. Closes: August 7, 2017     


Invasive Carp Challenge: is designed to tap into the creative minds of people around the world to join the government and research community in enhancing existing research and tools while developing new, innovative solutions. The challenge will accept solutions in any phase of development, from concept to design to field-tested models, specifically aimed at preventing invasive carp movement into the Great Lakes.  Written proposals will be accepted online through InnoCentive’s Challenge Center through Oct. 31, 2017. One or more solutions will share up to $700,000 in cash awards provided by the State of Michigan. Once registered, solvers can see a detailed description of the challenge, review existing deterrent technologies for invasive carp and submit their proposed solutions. Fracking is spreading invasive, non-native plants, Penn State researchers say

Researchers at Penn State have discovered in a recent study that Marcellus Shale fracking activity can aid in the spread of invasive, non-native plant species.The findings, published in July in the Journal of Environmental Management, are a result of research that began in 2012 and focused on 127 natural gas well pads on state forest land in the north-central part of the state.

DNR concerned with invasive red swamp crayfish found in southern Michigan

In states like Louisiana and Texas, the red crayfish is a delicacy when boiled. In Michigan, they're more than a nuisance - they threaten the state's ecosystem. The red swamp crayfish has been found in Michigan bodies of water this summer. While that may not seem like the end of the world, it could be for native crayfish in Michigan

Joint Statement on Planned Release of Brandon Road Draft Study to Stop Asian Carp

A transparent ranking system for measuring the socio-economic impact of plants and animals that are introduced by humans to areas where they do not naturally occur (termed "aliens") has been developed by an international team of scientists, from UCL, Université de Fribourg and Stellenbosch University.
