Mission

Supervisor: Assistant State Archivist
Summary: Employee in this position carries out duties related to the administration of the Archives Development Program.

Duties/Responsibilities
- Responsible for site inspections and surveys of county and municipal records management offices and archives
- Holds discussions with local government officials, archivists, historians, and genealogists about developing, equipping, supplying and operating local archives
- Helps in the preparation and distribution of informational literature on local archives management to and for local government archives and records managers
- Represents the Tennessee State Library and Archives at professional meetings to share and exchange experiences and solve problems related to local records and archives management
- Records and reports on the work of the Archives Development Program
- Provides support for the administration of Archives Development Program grants and other grants as required
- Creates and maintains directories of local archival personnel, county and municipal officials
- Conducts and supports education and outreach duties at TSLA, including digitization and research projects
- Develop partnerships and outreach programs with museums and libraries
- Works on special projects at the direction of the Assistant State Archivist
- Performs other archival duties and functions as assigned, including but not limited to, processing state records and donated materials in the Tennessee State Library and Archives and assistance with the archives microfilming program, public research requests and records conservation

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in History, Public History or Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited graduate school. Bachelor's degree or significant study in history preferred.
- Experience equivalent to one year of work in an archives, special collections library, or other records repository

Knowledge and Abilities:
- Familiarity with current literature on implications of electronic information processing and imaging systems in libraries and archives; shows knowledge and understanding of archival microfilming and digitization practices and standards
- Knowledge and understanding of the process and principles of records appraisal and disposition and the basic principles of archival theory and practice
- Ability to prepare brochures, handouts, and website pages for publication
- Good organizational skills in order to effectively manage the paperwork involved with the administration of the Archives Development Program and its special projects
- Competence in spreadsheet, database and word processing skills
- Competence in English composition equivalent to that of a successful research paper at the graduate level
- Excellent presentation and communication skills required to communicate effectively with county archivists, public officials, the media and members of other organizations encountered in outreach work
- Strong knowledge of American history in order to interpret primary source materials for education outreach purposes
- Must be able and willing to travel independently throughout the state of Tennessee, and hold a valid Tennessee driver's license
- Ability to work in confined quarters and dusty or damp conditions for extended periods of time during examination of neglected records storage
- Ability to lift and carry boxes of books and records weighing up to forty pounds up flights of stairs

Salary: $40,000 annual salary plus State of Tennessee benefits package.
