General Librarian/Instructor (Reference Librarian)

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Either a graduate degree from a library/information science program accredited by the American Library Association OR the equivalent combination of education and experience in a library; an understanding of general library procedures; organizational ability. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to contribute to a team-oriented, collaborative environment as well as to work independently; problem solving ability; working knowledge of office productivity software; and ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, faculty and staff.

Preferred: Health sciences reference experience, including database searching; familiarity with medical vocabulary and evidencebased practice as it relates to the literature; membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals; experience with EndNote or a citation management software package; experience with a learning management system (LSU Health Shreveport uses Moodle)

 

Job Summary:

·         Serves as one of the first points of contact for people using the library, either electronically or in-person

o    As an extension of this, will be assigned to liaise to specific departments or programs

·         Answers difficult and complex questions for students, faculty and staff, requiring knowledge of multiple sources and methods

·         Conducts comprehensive searches in online databases

·         Keeps accurate statistics, class evaluations, and records pertaining to reference

o    Writes promotional items for library services and resources

·         Works one-on-one or in small groups with students, faculty and staff

·         Leads parts of the overall educational program of the library. This includes assisting other librarians with classes and small-group activities, as well as developing and teaching entire sessions to meet the needs of the campus community

o    The person hired will be expected to work towards ownership and delivery of a set of classes in a particular area of library expertise, in addition to helping the library’s ongoing, regularly-scheduled classes 

·         Participate in morning reports, resident conferences, and educational events aimed at health care providers 

·         Participate in pre-college educational programs, in conjunction with other departments on campus

·         Supports the library’s outreach projects with diverse external audiences; may include exhibiting at relevant events

·         Development and maintenance of certain parts of the library's suite of websites

·         As necessary, may manage parts of the library’s social media presence

·         As necessary, assists patients or the public with their requests for biomedical and health information 

·         As assigned, may lead drop-in clinics in other buildings on campus, to improve the visibility and availability of the library to students, faculty and staff

 

The possibility exists for cross-training in other areas of the library. The person hired may be expected to contribute to other work in the library as assigned, including the popular writing consulting service. Serving on library-wide teams and relevant campus-wide committees is expected.
