This position coordinates and manages the statewide aquatic invasive species (AIS) program. This includes the implementation of monitoring and prevention programs at approximately 300 waters, the development and coordination of outreach and education efforts, serving as the state delegate to regional and national panels and committees, and coordinating the efforts of state and federal partners. The incumbent serves as the department's AIS subject matter expert and helps to develop policy, regulations and procedures to slow the spread of AIS in South Dakota; and will assist fisheries crews with fisheries management activities when necessary.   

A valid driver license is required and possess or be able to obtain a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) certification.

This position requires regular overnight and day trip travel across the state to coordinate with area fisheries staff and regional personnel. There are 2 - 3 out of state meetings and symposia regarding regional and national AIS issues yearly.

 

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:      
A master's degree with a fisheries-related focus from an accredited university is preferred. Experience working with AIS biology, issues and regulations; as part of a group of people trying to solve difficult problems; the public on difficult and controversial issues; and administrative tasks such as hiring employees, budgeting and planning is also preferred.

 

Knowledge of:

  • the principles and techniques used in fisheries research and management;
  • aquatic ecology and ecosystems, especially as how they relate to AIS species in South Dakota;
  • research, laboratory and statistical methods as they relate to fisheries research and management;
  • the principles of effective human relations and interacting with the public.

Skill to:

  • plan, design and implement surveys and research focused on AIS and fisheries management and report the findings;
  • work productively with public groups and groups of professionals;
  • design and conduct effective informational and professional presentations;
  • work with diverse user groups and partners.

Ability to:

  • work outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
  • work in boats and in wet and slippery environments;
  • lift gear and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds;
  • be self-motivated and work independently;
  • clearly communicate information and discuss sometimes controversial issues with staff and the public in a polite and professional manner;
  • coordinate and communicate effectively with various GFP staff and other agencies.
