Date/Time: July 19, 2017 1:00 – 2:30 ET

Description: The development and deployment of automated trucks is quickly becoming one of the most closely examined developments in the trucking industry, both from the carriers’ perspective and the government’s perspective.  It is unclear how long it will take for driving technology assisted trucks to become commonplace on U.S. highways, but it appears likely these trucks will become common at some point in the future.  However, while there is an increasing amount of research being done on automated trucks and strong interest from many stakeholders in learning about these technologies, there has been relatively little research conducted on the regulations, policies, and planning issues that will be needed to guide the development of driving technology assisted trucks.  Such research will be critical in ensuring the positives of deploying such trucks are maximized and the negatives are minimized.

This webinar will examine various perspectives on the policies, regulations, and planning considerations governments can implement to appropriately manage truck carriers’ gradual deployment of automated trucks.

Automated Trucks and Public Policy: Implementation Challenges and Opportunities

This presentation will provide an overview of the existing and emerging freight regulatory, planning, policy, and operational environments and challenges for autonomous truck technologies.  It will identify public and private sector barriers to, and opportunities for implementation of these technologies in freight operations.

SPEAKER:

·        Larry O’Rourke, ICF

Automated Commercial Motor Vehicles: Potential Driver and Vehicle Safety Impacts

This presentation will discuss the interface between automated truck technologies, the driver and vehicle safety.  Truck automation technologies raise many questions on how to best create new regulatory and enforcement approaches appropriate for the technology.

SPEAKER:

·        Brian Routhier, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

Autonomous Vehicle Impacts on the Trucking Industry

This presentation will discuss how autonomous vehicles will affect the trucking industry’s top concerns, including the hours of service regulations, driver shortages, and driver health and wellness.  A number of potential public sector impediments to autonomous truck deployment, including poor infrastructure quality, uncertainties related to tort law, and the possible need for federal preemption are also discussed.

SPEAKER:

·        Dan Murray, American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI)
