VEGGIE, Veterans Experiencing Growth through Garden Interactive Experiences.

The goal of this pilot is to help determine the component needed for a horticultural therapy program for veterans. Evaluation results will be used to assess the pilot and determine what improvements may be needed. After the pilot we plan on applying for a phase II grant of $150,000 from Trinity Health Foundation. We are looking for partners who would be willing to help us recruit program participants and sign a letter of support for our phase II project. The phase II project will be a one year project. This pilot program will need to be completed by the end of August. We are currently in the recruitment phase of the program. We are looking for at least 10 veteran’s to participate in this program. This grant falls under the mental health section of Trinity Health Foundation.

We actually have several possible opportunities for veterans to help with our pilot. First we are exploring the possibility of having 10-15 veterans take part in some focus groups in July. The goal of these groups are to discuss program content and get feedback. The focus groups will be July 7, 11, 18 from 2-3pm. Participants in the focus groups will get to take part in several horticultural activities that will become part of the pilot program. No prior gardening experience is needed.

A second opportunity is to take part in the pilot program. The project will work with veterans on a variety of horticulture topics. No prior gardening experience is needed. We will be conducting a pre and post evaluation to help measure the effectiveness of the program. Research shows that horticultural activities can provide a sense of purpose, reduced stress, improved self-esteem, increased social engagement for veterans. Research also shows that there have been positive outcomes for veterans with PTSD. We are looking at scheduling the pilot program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-11. We are looking at the following dates for the pilot: July 31, August 7, August 9, August 14, August 16, August 21, August 23 August 28 and August 30.

A final opportunity is with a 6 hour workshop that we will be hosting at UT Gardens on August 15th. This workshop will focus on the use of horticulture as a therapy and give veterans an overview of horticultural experiences.

You can have anyone interested in any of these opportunities contact me. The best way to contact me is through email and I can then call and discuss these opportunities in more detail with those who are interested.

Thanks
