Supervisor of Cataloging and Processing

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to manage and direct Cataloging and
Processing. Duties include, but are not limited to: supervising staff; directing the workflow; assisting the
Department Manager with planning and other administrative activities; resolving cataloging and processing
problems; recommending changes in cataloging procedures for increased efficiency and productivity; and
performing additional duties as assigned by the Technical Services Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as
exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned
staff, handling employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee
performance appraisals. Interviews and recommends candidates to fill vacancies in Cataloging and Processing;
trains and/or coordinates the training of new cataloging and processing employees. Performs original and adaptive
cataloging on both print and non-print material. Assists the Department Manager with planning and other
administrative activities as needed. Resolves cataloging problems of entry, classification and subject access.
Performs authority work for names and subjects in the local database. Recommends changes in cataloging and
processing procedures for increased efficiency and productivity. Supervises the Department in the absence of the
Department Manager. Keeps abreast of changes in cataloging and automation through reading and studying.
Informs other library agencies of changes in cataloging and processing procedures as necessary. Answers
cataloging and bibliographic questions from other staff members and general public.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central
office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health.
Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or
university, with a minimum three (3) years cataloging experience, or any equivalent combination of education,
training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
SALARY: $44,936.55 annually
