Description: Investing in port infrastructure and operations is vital to America’s business competitiveness and economic prosperity. These investments also provide enormous opportunities for environmental gains. The many people who live near and work at ports can be exposed to levels of air pollution that contribute to significant health problems. Findings from the 2016 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Port Strategy Assessment confirm that there are effective air quality improvement strategies available today for every type and size of port.   EPA’s Ports Initiative supports efforts to improve efficiency, enhance energy security, reduce costs, and minimize harmful health impacts by advancing next-generation, clean technologies and practices at ports. The Ports Initiative also facilitates collaboration between the port industry, communities, and all levels of government to help ensure timely and effective infrastructure development.  EPA led a two-year public process with leading port industry, community, and government experts to design a voluntary program focused on improving air quality around ports; the Ports Initiative recommendations were released in September 2016.

 

This webinar will provide an overview of EPA’s Ports Initiative and an update on two efforts underway to help build technical tools to ensure smart infrastructure investments and to promote port-community collaboration to prioritize and advance clean air projects.

Partnership with Port Everglades to Improve Port Emissions Analysis

This presentation will describe EPA’s partnership with Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades to develop a baseline emissions inventory and analyze emissions reduction strategies.  The partnership will also inform EPA’s development of methods, lessons learned, and practical examples that can be shared with other ports, related agencies, and stakeholders.

Partnership in New Orleans to Promote Community-Port Collaboration

This presentation will provide an overview of a pilot project with the Port of New Orleans and local community organizations to improve both environmental performance at the port and environmental health outcomes for nearby communities through effective stakeholder engagement.  EPA’s collaboratively-developed draft capacity building tools will be utilized and refined to assess local conditions, support partnership building, and enhance capacity to implement collaborative solutions to priority challenges determined by pilot project participants.
