Position Summary:The University Libraries of Virginia Tech are excited to announce a new position to join a team offering critical and sophisticated services that enhance the scholarly expression of faculty and graduate students at Virginia Tech. This new position will bring experience with relevant qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques to support Social Science researchers at Virginia Tech, and will coordinate and assess new data-focused educational opportunities offered by the University Libraries.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, knowledge of digital research methods, tools, and applications in the Social Sciences and related fields, experience managing and interpreting common types of digital data and assets studied in those fields. An advanced degree in a Social Science or Education field is preferred.

This position will also work closely with other disciplinary consultants to provide qualitative and quantitative research data support to faculty and students in the social sciences and related fields. Working as a core member of the Data Services unit and in close collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Engagement Unit, the incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating and assessing educational opportunities that enable members of the Virginia Tech community at all levels and in all disciplines to work more efficiently with data. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with program assessment, with research trends in Education or the Social Sciences, and with planning and delivering content to faculty, staff, and students in a team-based environment. Responsibilities:
- Serves as lead consultant to the social sciences on managing and curating qualitative and quantitative research data
- Serves as consultant to instructors on incorporating computational or analysis-based tools and methods into their courses or curricula.
- Develops, coordinates, and evaluates opportunities that facilitate learning about data and information access, data discovery, data mining, data publishing, data management, data visualization/exploration, and preservation
- Keeps up with trends in digital research issues, methods, and tools in related disciplines
- Identifies data, digital scholarship, and digital library development referral opportunities; makes connections with research teams across campus
- Participates in teams and working groups and in various data-related projects and initiatives as a result of developments and changes in library services

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s or other advanced degree in a field related to the position OR Bachelor’s degree in a computing field or field related to the supported community and significant experience with research methods in the Social Sciences or Education
- Experience with, and knowledge of, trends in qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Teaching experience
- Thorough understanding of university research environments
- A service ethic and a desire to further the cause of university research
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously, to set priorities, and to meet deadlines
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s degree or other advanced degree in an education or social science field with relevant experience managing and analyzing data.
- Experience, training or education in informatics, data management, data literacy, data curation
- Experience supporting interdisciplinary research projects and flourishing in collaborative environments.
- Experience using programming languages (e.g. R, Python) to analyze statistical or textual data
- Experience with qualitative data analysis tools and software such as NVivo and quantitative data analysis tools and software such as SPSS, SAS, and Stata
