[Wayne Davis Presents Ed Burdette the 2017 Dougherty Award]

Edwin “Ed” Burdette spent six decades at UT, watching the university and the world change around him. Through it all, his expertise in concrete engineering never wavered as he educated generation after generation of civil engineers. For that dedication and service, the Tickle College of Engineering has presented Burdette with its highest honor, the Nathan W. Dougherty Award for 2017. "I’m very grateful for the opportunities that UT gave me, both as a student and then later as a teacher," said Burdette. "The education I got from the college and the rewarding experience I got from working there changed my life in ways I can’t imagine."

[2017 Torchbearers]Accomplished faculty, staff, and students were honored Wednesday evening at the annual Chancellor’s Honors Banquet<http://honorsbanquet.utk.edu/2017-winners/>, the university’s largest recognition event of the year. Among the Tickle College of Engineering recipients:

  *   Ben Blalock—Alexander Prize
  *   Aerospace engineering senior Joshua Dobbs—Torchbearer award.
  *   Jenny Retherford—National Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award.
  *   Jon Hathaway—Success in Multidisciplinary Research

UT Launches Integrated Business and Engineering Program for Undergraduates<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-04-21-17.html#>

[Mary Brow]The Haslam College of Business and the Tickle College of Engineering have partnered to create a new cross-disciplinary learning experience for undergraduate students. Through the Integrated Business and Engineering Program, a group of 20 to 30 students will spend three years studying how to apply engineering processes in a business setting. Mary Brow will serve as the new program’s director, joining the university from DeRoyal Industries in May. Brow has more than a decade of industry experience as a process engineer and is an alumna of UT’s Professional MBA program.

[Charles Moore]Control Engineering Magazine named Charles Moore, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, to their Process Automation Hall of Fame. Two new members were inducted this year.

Chris Wetteland, materials science lecturer, and Matthew Young, Eastman Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, spoke at this semester’s Mic/Nite. They gave a presentation about additive manufacturing and the Innovation and Collaboration Studio.

[WomEngineers Day]The second biennial WomEngineers Day Conference will be Saturday, April 22. This is a one-day conference in which professional engineers, business partners, and faculty provide expertise on both professional and personal topics related to career and life choices. All students are welcome to attend. Discussion will include topics of diversity and inclusion. In addition, the conference will offer a specialized track for high school students interested in engineering, including instructions and guidance from academic advisors and current engineering students here at the University of Tennessee.

Sreeram Vaddiraju will discuss "Mass Production of Nanowire-based Energy Conversion Devices: Opportunities and Barriers" at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, in Room 409 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. Vaddiraju is an associate professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Six graduating engineering seniors are building a big graduation present to benefit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They are building an improved outdoor donation box for the non-profit Friends of the Smokies. For the prototype, the design has involved collaboration across three different departments.

[Order of the Engineer]

Forty-three May and August graduates of the Tickle College of Engineering were inducted into the Order of the Engineer during a ring ceremony on April 12. This national organization fosters the spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. Initiates pledge an obligation to practice ethically, to make the best use of the Earth's resources, to uphold the dignity of the profession, and to devote their skills to the benefit of humanity. Initiates receive a stainless steel ring that serves as an inward reminder of the obligation to which they have committed and an outward symbol of the engineering profession. The ceremony was presided over by Chris Cox, head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and John Kobza, head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Membership in the order is open to any degreed engineer or senior students within four months of graduation.




Gandomi Receives Excellence in Graduate Research Award<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-04-21-17.html#>
[Yasser Ashraf Gandomi]Yasser Ashraf Gandomi, a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, received the Graduate Student Senate’s Excellence in Graduate Research Award last week at an awards breakfast with Chancellor Beverly Davenport. The Graduate Student Senate presents this award each year to a graduate student who has received national and/or international recognition in his/her field and shows professional promise in his/her area of research and creative achievement. Ashraf Gandomi works in the Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion Laboratory under the direction of his advisor Matthew Mench.

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering will hold its Senior Design Showcase at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 27, on the Thompson-Bowling Arena Concourse. More than 30 teams will present the results of their yearlong projects. Cash prizes will be award for best projects and posters, which will be on display.

Tennessee Transfer Connect is a newly formed program seeking to proved mentorship for transfer students. The program is looking for transfer students who are interested in networking with other transfer students. Spring Banquet

[Engineering Professional Practice Spring Banquet]Engineering Professional Practice recently held its sixth annual spring banquet at Calhoun's on the River. The banquet was attended by students currently participating in the cooperative education and internship education programs.

Also in attendance were distinguished guests Dorothy Bryson, Dean Wayne Davis and his wife Sylvia, and noted alumni J. Michael Stone (ChE ’63). Stone graciously provides the resources for the annual spring banquet, the J. Michael Stone Engineering Professional Practice Leadership Development Program and the John W. Prados Chemical Engineering Co-op Scholarship.

Fall 2017 Registration Dates

  *   Freshmen (zero to 29 hours earned) April 24 and 25

Students who are taking EF 151/157- 152/158/Physics 135/137-136/138 and Math 141/147-142/148 and Computer Science 102-130 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office located in room 316 A Perkins Hall. Students please check your UT e-mail and schedule your advising appointment using the link inside the Grades First e-mail you receive.

Students who are in Good Academic Standing and have completed EF 151/157 – EF 152/158 or Physics 135/137- 136/138 and Math 141/147 – 142/148 are advised in their major department with faculty or professional advisors. MABE and CBE students will be receiving a Grades First e-mail to schedule advising appointments with your professional advisers. Other engineering majors, please contact your major department/faculty adviser to schedule an advising appointment.

NOTE: Engineering students will be taking Math courses together again in Fall 2017. Please look for sections with the following professors:
