Position Summary: The Library Data Analyst is a faculty position that develops, gathers, and analyzes data within the University Libraries at Virginia Tech. The position serves to promote the value of library
data and to provide various forms of expertise. This person oversees and participates in data efforts throughout the Libraries; collects, analyzes, reports, and documents a wide range of library services; and contributes to a data–driven approach to achieving
strategic objectives. The Analyst will also develop a thorough familiarity with the many data sources available to the university and library and understand their appropriate uses. The Library Data Analyst also supports internal training, consults on library
data, and utilizes library systems to extract data.
The Analyst works closely with all library units on projects and broader initiatives. This position will address the continual development of library services infrastructure for sound data management and collection practices. By combining efforts across
units, the Libraries will unify and streamline data activities that improve library-wide data and decision support. This position also facilitates the efficient, safe, and secure use of the data so that the Libraries can connect its work to the ongoing evaluation
and evolution of the University. Development of new metrics and data collection tools will be ongoing as the Libraries’ changing landscape continues to unfold.
The Analyst will have a liaison role with Virginia Tech’s new Office of Academic Decision Support (ADS). The Office of Academic Decision Support promotes systematic reflection and facilitates a culture
of continuous improvement in the university by developing systems and providing solutions and analyses to support strategic and operational decisions across all levels of the institution. The office provides data-driven insights to support and strengthen shared
understandings of institutional data to achieve student and faculty success. This position is responsible for representing the library and its data within this context as well as collaborate with, and contribute to, the work created within
ADS.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in information science, statistics, or related field OR Bachelor’s degree with applicable experience.
- Knowledge of statistical methods and the ability to perform data analysis.
- Demonstrated experience using quantitative and qualitative data analysis applications, such as
SPSS,
SAS, Stata, R, MATLAB, NVivo,
ATLAS.ti, Minitab, and/or other data analytics software solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to advance multiple complex projects in a team environment, meet deadlines, and prioritize work.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations while working with diverse audiences and colleagues throughout the Libraries and University.
- Planning and leadership skills, with the ability to function independently, take initiative, and set goals and priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Business Intelligence Systems such as Microstrategies and/or interactive data visualization tools such as Tableau
- Demonstrated competence developing
SQL queries.
- Knowledge of various data collecting entities such as
IPEDS, ARL,
ASERL, and/or other typical data collection agencies.
