Full-Time, 10-Month Academic Position Reports to Director of Libraries and Head of Lower School
Position Purpose: The Lower School Librarian values the mission of the school, a school for “hearts and minds,” and is committed to creating an inviting environment that engages students
in lifelong learning. In collaboration with faculty, this educator designs, implements, and teaches a reading and information literacy program for grades K-4, a program that instills a love of learning, fosters multiple literacies, and empowers students to
be enthusiastic readers, responsible users of information, and creative and critical thinkers.
Qualifications & Skills:

Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program
●
Two to three years’ experience as a lower school teacher librarian, preferred
●
Book ordering, cataloging and circulation, and inventory
●
Broad-based reader with a proficient knowledge of literature and resources
●
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, supported by a sense of humor
●
Proficient communicator who works effectively with faculty and students
●
Creativity, knowledge, and willingness to promote the library
●
Knowledgeable in the inquiry learning model and visual thinking process
●
Knowledgeable about child development so as to plan literacy programs
●
A demonstrated learner within a digital environment and facilitator in using online catalog, audiobooks, LibGuides, library blogs, and databases
●
Experience in maintaining a library, media, and design space that affords zones for reading, concentration, collaboration, research, and creation
●
Enthusiastic collaborator with parents and library volunteers
●
Adheres to ALA and AASL professional standards for librarians
Key Responsibilities: Instructional partner with faculty
●
Collaborate with faculty to teach literacy skills in connection with subject area goals
●
Provide training and resources to teachers to demonstrate best teaching practices Librarian as teacher of literacy and research skills
●
Create a culture of student learning through inquiry learning and visual thinking
●
Create activities for scheduled library visits to teach information literacy skills
●
Design programs that engage students in a love of reading and exploration Collection development and management of library resources
●
Become an expert on best resources, in all formats, for the LS library collection
●
Showcase fiction and nonfiction collection through blogs and attractive displays Additional Duties: Attends faculty and professional development meetings and performs other duties
and responsibilities as assigned. Attends weekly chapel.
Physical Demands
Physical demands in performing the librarian job included climbing stairs; stooping and bending to shelve books; pushing heavy book carts; and occasionally lifting boxes up to 20 lbs.
Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment.
