Description: In recent years there has been an increasing focus on connected and automated vehicles, both by public sector agencies such as FHWA and by private vehicle manufacturers and carriers.  Many truck manufacturers and carriers, particularly large, long-haul, over-the-road truckload (TL) carriers, are particularly interested in this emerging technology as a means to reduce their costs and increase their operational efficiency.  In fact, many analysts believe the trucking industry will adopt connected trucks more quickly than the passenger automobile industry, due to the greater bottom line benefits derived from the likely financial and operational efficiencies achieved by using connected vehicles.  Various truck manufacturers and carriers have already started to test the technology to improve and refine it so that in time it can be used for actual truck shipments.

This webinar will feature discussion about on-going, truck-focused, connected Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) research initiatives being conducted by both the FHWA Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center and private companies.

Topics and Presenters:

Public Sector Truck-Focused V2I and V2V Research Initiatives:
This presentation will provide an overview of Turner Fairbank's current truck-oriented Vehicle-to-Infrastructure and Vehicle-to-Vehicle research initiatives, including truck platooning and related topics, and how heavy vehicles adjust their speed profiles to traffic signal timings in real time to account for higher truck traffic volumes and reduced fuel consumption/emissions through intersections.

Using V2V Technologies to Increase Truck Platooning:
This presentation will discuss efforts by utilize Vehicle-to-Vehicle communications technology to increase the efficiency of truck platooning and help reduce fuel usage/emissions and enhance safety involving trucks.
