Geographers,

Are you working on a project that utilizes open source geospatial or statistical work? If so, the upcoming FOSS4G meeting in Knoxville wants you to share your experience. Please contact Randal Hale with North River Geographic ([log in to unmask]) with your proposed talk/demo/etc and he’ll do his best to work you into the schedule.

We are lucky to host two geospatial meetings in Knoxville this spring, TNGIC and FOSS4G. This is another great opportunity to network with geospatial professionals in our community, market yourself by presenting your work, and learn from others for practically no cost. If you are early in your geography education this is a great opportunity to attend your first professional-ish meeting.

Good people,

I apologize for the email and not BCC'ing everyone - BUT - we're a small group and it's good to get acquainted.

I need some help spreading the word. This is growing organically - which is good. I've got people popping up wanting to give presentations or come to it (from Georgia, TN, NC, One guy from Florida, and Alabama). The easiest thing for me to do is update the wiki site with more news as it becomes available. Invite people from colleges, local gov, where ever you can. This is a community building event as we poke a little at the "way things are usually done".

As this grows I'm seriously debating doing a bit "unconference style" and making it more free form vs rigid. We've got some excellent talks on LIDAR. Talks on QGIS. Talks on Leaflet. Talks on OSGEO. It's going to be awesome. I'm about to send out more emails to different groups but if someone could hassle people at ORNL or the local colleges that would rock. TNGIC has a conference coming up - so I've been trying to not compete with their party. I've been "accepting" talks on about anything as long as it has a FOSS4G Component to it. Email me if you want to talk and I'll add you to the wiki site. If this gets enough steam we do it again next year maybe in Chattanooga or Johnson City or Knoxville (or Asheville - we refuse to acknowledge political boundaries)

Anyway - we're also looking for sponsors. UTK has donated the facility. A few companies have donated some money - all were trying to cover is Food and Parking. Probably $700 bucks in total and we have about half of that. If we "make" money - eh - I'm probably going to donate it to a software project. This is a break even event. I'm not taking money from people if we don't need it as this gets closer - but I'll still scream your name out during Lunch for offering or donating.

Randy
