(Lee) Dodds, Professor Emeritus and former head of the UT Nuclear Engineering Department, recently gave invited presentations on "Energy Choices and Consequences" to the Western South Carolina local section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and also to the Savannah River local section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). Both presentations were based on a seminar course entitled "Energy Choices and Consequences," which Dr. Dodds originally developed and continually updates, and teaches annually in the UT Honors Program. The symposium offers students from every discipline the opportunity to give a brief oral research presentation to their peers. It is organized by and for undergraduates from every discipline and, as such, offers a wide scope of exposure to research in a setting that is less intimidating than professional conferences. Read more<http://www.ursautk.org> EUReCA – Exhibition of Research and Creative Achievement<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-03-10-17.html#> [EUReCA]The Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EUReCA) will occur during the week of April 17-21 this year and is open to all undergraduate students at UT. It is intended to emphasize your achievements in research and creative activities by allowing you to present your work in a poster format. "Research and creative achievement" for the purposes of this exhibition means a scholarly collaboration between students and a faculty member, and has in the past included results of senior design and independent study courses, as well as undergraduate involvement in research projects. Research and design posters will be judged separately and awards will be given in both categories. The abstract submission deadline is March 11. WomEngineers Day is a one-day conference where professional engineers, business partners, and faculty provide expertise on both professional and personal topics related to career and life choices. All college students are welcome to attend. Discussion will include topics of diversity and inclusion. In addition, the conference will offer a specialized track for high school students interested in engineering, including instructions and guidance from academic advisors and current engineering students here at the University of Tennessee. Read more and register<http://womengineersday.org> Student News and Opportunity Nature Publishes UT Graduate Student’s Work<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-03-10-17.html#> [Jacob Raplee]Research by Jacob Raplee, a graduate research assistant in both mechanical engineering and business administration, was recently published in Nature‘s highly regarded Scientific Reports. Raplee authored a report on a new way of in-situ monitoring of electron beam additive manufacturing. That work caught the attention of both Nature and faculty like Dr. Suresh Babu, the Tickle College of Engineering's joint UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair of Advanced Manufacturing. This program provides top-off funds to augment the graduate stipends of selected newly admitted PhD students whose undergraduate engineering or related degrees are from another official SEC university. The top-off stipend has a value of $5,000 per year for up to five years, based on the recipient’s satisfactory progress toward the completion of a PhD degree. Featured Student: Isaiah Cash [Isaiah Cash]The featured student this week is Isaiah Cash, a computer engineering major from Corryton, Tennessee, who worked as a co-op student at Motorola Solutions in Franklin, Tennessee. Cash worked in the public safety communications department. Their land mobile radios are the basis for police, medical, and emergency services across the country. He was expected to coverage test areas with new radio systems. Most of his time during the work term was spent with the customer or other Motorola engineers. Although driving around in a car testing radio strength is monotonous, he was incorporated with senior engineers to understand the system and network required for their radio systems. His training mostly involved being with other engineers in the field. There were few upfront guidelines or staged training, so he was able to take time learning from the other engineers or on his own. Cash gained a few technical skills while on the job which included networking and the RF systems. A big challenge to him since the company is very spread out over the southeast, he had to learn how to travel at moment’s notice. It was important to plan travel and keep up with work responsibilities outside of the office. The NSLC on Engineering is a conference providing talented high school students from around the world with essential leadership skills, hands on engineering experience, opportunities to meet working professionals, and visits to engineering facilities. Under the guidance of Team Advisors, students will explore various fields of engineering, learn important concepts such as the design process and programming, and participate in a variety of engineering build projects. Team Advisor's (TAs) work as facilitators, presenters, and simulation monitors to help make students' NSLC experience as memorable as possible.
