[Human Power T]

Engineering Professor Designs World Record-Breaking Power T<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-03-31-17.html#>
[Matthew Young]With more than 3,100 students, about 700 faculty, staff, and retirees, about 400 alumni, and one bluetick coonhound, UT set the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD title for the largest human letter on Wednesday, March 29. Volunteers stood together to create a Power T that spanned 190 feet by 190 feet, encompassing the majority of Shields-Watkins Field at Neyland Stadium. Matthew Young, professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, was the letter's architect. Using CAD software, he answered a critical question for event organizers—how do you design a Power T large enough to hold 4,000 people?

Featured Student: Jonathan Farmer

[Jonathan Farmer]Jonathan Farmer, a nuclear engineering major from Tullahoma, Tennessee, worked as a co-op student at Dominion in Richmond, Virginia. Farmer specifically worked in the Nuclear Analysis and Fuels department for Dominion Resources.

The group he was in was called Nuclear Core Design (NCD). NCD is in charge of monitoring all of Dominion's nuclear reactors and most of the time is spent on analysis of data coming from the reactors to ensure that they are operating within NRC and Dominions guidelines.

In particular, Farmer was responsible for the monthly reporting for the North Anna Power Plant reactors and Millstone Power Plant Unit 2. The monthly reporting consisted of running computer codes to simulate and analyze how the core had performed over the month, and then putting the results of that analysis into reports that could be shared. This process took up the first two weeks of each month. Then Farmer would work with full-time engineers on their projects, such as pre-outage work and testing updates to computer codes.

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, 865-974-5323, or 110 Perkins Hall.
