Phillips Presents
TCE Distinguished Lecture
Cynthia Phillips will speak in the Tickle College of Engineering 2017 Distinguished Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Monday, March 27, in Room
622 of the Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building. Phillips will discuss "Sensor
Placement For Municipal Water Networks" She is a Senior Scientist at the Center for Computing Research, Sandia National Laboratories. Her visit is sponsored in conjunction with UT's chapter of Sigma Xi, the national research honors society. Sigma Xi’s
mission is focused on research that can improve humanity, which dovetails with Phillips presentation. The lecture will be viewable as a webcast

ISSE Makes Seed Grant
Funding Available

Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE) at the University of Tennessee makes annual seed grant funding available to UT researchers for multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator research and support. This year’s awards (2017-18) will be made
to support strategic research projects in one of the two ISSE focus areas of methane or water. Proposals are due May 15, 2017. The RFP and budget worksheet are available for download at isse.utk.edu.

CEE Projects Supported
by New National Center

the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), and the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) are well-represented in the first projects selected for funding by the new National University Transportation Center at the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. Associate Professor Chris Cherry has one
project, and Asad Khattak, Beaman Professor and Transportation Program Coordinator, is co-PI with UNC's Noreen McDonald on another
project.

Kennedy Joins TCE
as New Director of Communications

Kennedy recently joined the Tickle College of Engineering as the new director of communications, replacing Kim Cowart, who retired from her position after 19 years.
"Christie has a great understanding of the potential of our college and a lot of fresh ideas that will help continue the
momentum we’ve built," said Dean Wayne Davis. "We're excited to welcome her aboard."

Zelenay to Speak
in CBE Seminar

Zelenay, PhD and DSc, will speak on "Platinum Group Metal-free Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction in Fuel Cells" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in Room 416 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. Zelenay is Project and Team Leader in the Materials Physics
and Applications Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory
in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The seminar is presented by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Day is April 22

second biennial WomEngineers Day Conference will be April 22 in Knoxville. WomEngineers Day is a one-day conference where professional engineers, business partners, and faculty provide expertise on both professional and personal topics related to career and
life choices. All college students are welcome to attend. Discussion will include topics of diversity and inclusion. In addition, the conference will offer a specialized track for high school students interested in engineering, including instructions and guidance
from academic advisors and current engineering students here at the University of Tennessee.

Caroline Black Named
Recipient of the 2017 Jimmy and Ileen Cheek Graduate Student Medal of Excellence Award

Black, a graduate student in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, has been named recipient of the 2017 Jimmy and Ileen Cheek Graduate Student Medal of Excellence award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding student
pursuing a PhD who has completed at least four semesters of study. Black is pursuing her PhD in biomedical engineering under the guidance of her advisor, Assistant Professor Caleb Rucker. The award will be presented to Black at the Chancellor’s Honor Banquet
on April 11.

Awards Nominations Open
Nominations for this year's Environmental
Leadership Awards are now open. The Office of Sustainability seeks to recognize students, staff and faculty members, and community members who lead and inspire the UT community toward a more sustainable future. There are eight nomination categories. If
you know of a person or a group which has gone above and beyond to demonstrate environmental leadership on UT’s campus, nominate them online at tiny.utk.edu/ELANoms.
Nomination deadline is 2 p.m. on Monday, April 17.

NE Grad Students
Take Spring Break Trip to Princeton
What do Department of Nuclear Engineering graduate
students do during their spring break? Jump in a UT van and road trip to New Jersey to see one of country’s biggest fusion experiments! Anurag Maan, Jonah Duran, Seung-Sup Lee, Joe Kelsey, and Shawn Zamperini traveled with Assistant Professor David Donovan
to Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory last week. The group toured the NSTX-U fusion experiment (currently down for maintenance) and LTX-Beta, as well as the new Andlinger Center material characterization laboratories at Princeton University. They had a great
experience and had "surprisingly little traffic" on the 11-hour drive.

'Hydrolunteers' Helping
Keep East Tennessee Waterways Clean
The Vol Navy has been a key UT tradition for more than 50 years, brightening up the Tennessee River waterfront during home football
weekends. Now a different kind of Volunteer spirit is taking care of the water upon which the boats rely. The "Hyrdolunteers" were formed in 2015 as a way for students from varying backgrounds to come together to better understand, protect and preserve water
resources in East Tennessee.

DOE Offers Graduate
Student Funding Opportunity
The Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is accepting applications. Applications are due May
16, 2017. SCGSR prepares graduate students for STEM careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding
US graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral
thesis, while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories.

SEC Engineering Deans
Establish Graduate Fellowship

deans of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including Tickle College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis, have established the SEC Engineering Deans Graduate Fellow Program. This program provides top-off funds to augment the graduate stipends of selected newly
admitted PhD students whose undergraduate engineering or related degrees are from another official SEC university. The top-off stipend has a value of $5,000 per year for up to five years, based on the recipient’s satisfactory progress toward the completion
of a PhD degree.

The Center for Student Engagement offers a variety of resources for Student Organization Advisors and those interested in serving as
an advisor.
- Student Organization Advisor Interest Form—At times, registered student organizations are without
a faculty/staff advisor. This form serves as a bank of potential advisors we can use to refer student organization leaders in need of a faculty/staff advisor. By completing this form, you are listing your name as a potential advisor for a student organization. If
interested, access the form here. Please feel free to share this form with any colleagues who may be interested in serving as an advisor.
- Student Organization Advisor Online Training Modules are available for Student Organization
Advisors via Canvas to gain more resources, feel more comfortable and confident advising a student organization, and engage with other Student Organization Advisors. Current Advisors may have gotten an invitation, if you did not, please contact Kat Waxstein
at [log in to unmask]. Those who complete the Online Training Modules receive a certificate of completion and a small gift from the Center for Student Engagement.
- Student Organization Advisor Workshops are intended to provide Student Organization Advisors
with additional information, skills, and resources that will help them to better serve their student organizations. Upcoming Workshops include Re-Registration, Recruitment, and Retention on March 29 and Managing Elections and Officer Transitions on April 12. Both
Workshops are held at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Dunford Hall Room 2325.

City
Internships has funds available for four fully-sponsored places for students to join the Global Explorer Program this summer in New York, London, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Miami. The Global Explorer Program centers on an internship placement with
a leading company, accompanied by a comprehensive series of classes, workshops and networking events optimized to enhance a student's commercial skills and employability. The program is open to undergraduate students, including seniors.

Students who are taking EF 151/157- 152/158/Physics 135/137-136/138 and Math 141/147-142/148 and Computer Science 102-130 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office located in room 316 A Perkins Hall. Students please check your UT e-mail
and schedule your advising appointment using the link inside the Grades First e-mail you receive.
Students who are in Good Academic Standing and have completed EF 151/157 – EF 152/158 or Physics 135/137- 136/138 and Math 141/147 – 142/148 are advised in their major department with faculty or professional advisors. MABE and CBE students will be receiving
a Grades First e-mail to schedule advising appointments with your professional advisers. Other engineering majors, please contact your major department/faculty adviser to schedule an advising appointment.

Featured Student: Jillian Schwendeman
[log in to unmask]" class="">The featured student this week is Jillian Schwendeman, a biomedical engineering major from
Marietta, Ohio, who worked as a co-op student at ChoiceSpine in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Schwendeman worked in the Engineering Research and Design Department. The engineers assigned her different tasks as they needed to get projects done. She helped a lot with editing and creating drawings for their parts. She was also given design tasks for improving
certain instruments.
Schwendeman was able to enhance her skills working with the Solidworks and the process of 3D printing and how to operate the SAP system. At times some of her assignments felt challenging since she wasn’t familiar with the systems they used for designing all
the projects and to fulfill the expectations set for her but she learned how to ask a lot of questions and for the input or ideas of others.
Being able to work in the professional setting while still in school gave her a lot of experience with not only engineering, but communication and responsibility in the workforce.

Multicultural Student Life
The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:
The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.
The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two textbooks free of charge. Students must return the borrowed
books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.
The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate
those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.
The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.
Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with
time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.
Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained
student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.
Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule
for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
