The Spring 2017 Engineering Expo is set to take place 2-5 p.m. Monday, February 6, in Thompson-Boling Arena, with the Interview Day to follow on Tuesday, February 7. The Expo is the premier event for recruiting engineering co-op and internship students on The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.

TED Talks are designed to inform and inspire new conversations about our shared future.

Dr. Mi Li will speak on "Structural Changes of the Biopolymers in Genetically Modified Switchgrass and Their Significance to the Reduced Biomass Recalcitrance" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, in Room 416 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. Li is a post-doctoral research associate in the BioEnergy Sciences Center, Joint Institute for Biological Sciences, a division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the Dr. Arthur J. Ragauskas Laboratory.

Trinkle to Discuss Materials Processing Topic<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
Dr. Dallas Trinkle will speak on "Computing Mass Transport in Crystals: Theory, Computation, and Applications" at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, in Room 307 of the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF). Trinkle is an associate professor in materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Refreshments will be available at 2 p.m. before the talk.

The National Society of Black Engineers will host VOLunteer Networking at 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 6, in the Great Room at the International House. Students will have the opportunity to get one-on-one time with companies to make an impression towards landing interviews, and ultimately co-op or internship positions.

UT to Host Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Conference<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The University of Tennessee will welcome nine universities from around the region to the Tickle College of Engineering for the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference February 24-26. Hosted by UT's IISE chapter, the event—themed "Ingenuity at Work"—will bring nearly 200 students from schools including Clemson University, North Carolina State University and Virginia Tech University to Knoxville for student-led activities at the Holiday Inn World's Fair Park and the Foundry.

[International Space Station]The Student Space Technology Association (SSTA), in conjunction with other organizations on and off campus, will host "Amateur Radio on the International Space Station" sometime during the week of February 27 to May 5, 2017. Students are welcome to submit their questions as part of the SSTA contest to interview an astronaut. The deadline to submit questions is February 17.

The Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 class of Engineering Ambassadors. Founded in 2004, the Ambassadors are the undergraduate arm of recruitment for the college. The purpose of the ambassadors is to recruit prospective students to the TCE, involve the college's student body in its goals, and stimulate community interest in the field of engineering. The application is available online on the ambassador website<http://www.engr.utk.edu/ambassador/index.php>. Applications are welcome from all engineering majors, including biosystems engineering. Deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Friday, February 10, in 316A Perkins Hall.

[GLobal Initiatives Ecuador Trip]

Alternative Summer Break Planned in Ecuador<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
A limited number of slots are available for the TCE Global Initiative program's Alternative Summer Break in Ecuador, scheduled for May 13-20, 2017. Students will visit the town of Puyo, Ecuador, and use their skills in an animal sanctuary to build enclosures and trails. While in Ecuador, students can hike near the Tungurahua Volcano and stand on the equator near Quito. Program fee is $1,985 per person plus airfare. [SEC Engineering Deans Graduate Fellow Program]

SEC Engineering Deans Establish Graduate Fellowship<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The deans of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including Tickle College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis, have established the SEC Engineering Deans Graduate Fellow Program. This program provides top-off funds to augment the graduate stipends of selected newly admitted PhD students whose undergraduate engineering or related degrees are from another official SEC university. The top-off stipend has a value of $5,000 per year for up to five years, based on the recipient’s satisfactory progress toward the completion of a PhD degree.

Summer 2017 Research Experiences Available for Undergraduates in Science & Engineering<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program enables undergraduates from universities around the country to gain hands-on experience in conducting original fluid power research. Students work in a university research lab on a project related to fluid power along with a faculty advisor and graduate student mentor with expertise in the field.

The ONSF Exploration Grant supports current UT undergraduates—with awards of up to $5000—in their efforts to plan for, research, and establish in-person connections abroad for competitive scholarship opportunities, including, but not limited to, the Fulbright US Student Program, post-graduate funding programs in the UK and Ireland (British Marshall, Mitchell, Gates Cambridge, and Rhodes), the DAAD programs in Germany, and other recognized scholarships that support post-graduate experiences. This is NOT a study abroad grant. In order to help students develop their applications, ONSF will host an Exploration Grant workshop ahead of the February 13 application deadline. This hands-on workshop will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about the program:

BHW Group Offers Scholarship for Women in STEM<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The BHW Group is sponsoring a $3,000 scholarship for Women in STEM. Women who are pursuing an undergraduate or master's degree and are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics during the 2017 school year are eligible. Applications are due each April 15 and the winner will be announced on May 1.

The Educational Advancement Program (EAP)<http://eap.utk.edu/> provides academic assistance for first-generation, low income students, and students with a documented disability, enrolled at the University of Tennessee. In providing academic assistance, EAP offers the following services listed below for UT students to excel both in and out of the classroom: holistic academic coaching, specialized and individualized tutoring, instructional support, smaller course sizes for Chemistry 130 and Mathematics 125, financial literacy, free GRE preparation course, and research opportunities.

Math Camp Counselor Positions Open<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The Student Success Center seeks applicants to be Math Camp counselors for 2017. The camp is a non-credit, invitation-only, intensive three-week summer program designed to improve math skills of incoming freshmen so that they can succeed in their first required math course. Students also receive career and major counseling, along with introductions to a variety of UT support systems. Math Camp counselors will work directly with participants to help guide, counsel, and assist them during the three-week experience. Counselors lead social and cultural activities (including daytime, evening, and weekend programs), provide students with insights into the culture at UT, and provide a network of contacts to ensure that participants feel connected to campus.

Applications for the Richard Goolsby Scholarship Fund are available online from the Foundation for the Carolinas. The fund was created by William and Martha DeBrule in honor of Richard Goolsby, a plastics pioneer, and is sponsored by the Carolinas Section Society of Plastics Engineers. The fund provides college scholarships to students who have expressed career interest or demonstrated practical interest in the plastics industry.

2017 Regenerative Medicine Summer Internship Opportunities<http://news.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atce-02-03-17.html#>
The SRF Summer Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Summer Scholar is responsible for his or her own research project in such areas as genetic engineering and stem cell research. At the end of the summer, students will have the opportunity to put all of their newly developed communication skills into practice at a student symposium. Applications will be accepted until noon PST February 6, 2017.

  *   Priority (Chancellor Honors/Haslam, Veterans, Athletes, Disability) March 20 and 21
  *   Seniors (90 + hours earned) March 27 and 28
  *   Juniors (60 + hours earned) April 3 and 4
  *   Sophomores (30 + hours earned) April 10 and 11
  *   Freshmen (zero to 29 hours earned) April 17 and 18

Students who are taking EF 151/157- 152/158/Physics 135/137-136/138 and Math 141/147-142/148 and Computer Science 102-130 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office located in room 316 A Perkins Hall.  Students please check your UT e-mail and schedule your advising appointment using the link inside the Grades First e-mail you receive.

Students who are in Good Academic Standing and have completed EF 151/157 – EF 152/158 or Physics 135/137- 136/138 and Math 141/147 – 142/148 are advised in their major department with faculty or professional advisors. MABE and CBE students will be receiving a Grades First e-mail to schedule advising appointments with your professional advisers. Other engineering majors, please contact your major department/faculty adviser to schedule an advising appointment.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Book Loan Program<http://multicultural.utk.edu/services/book-loan/> allows students to borrow up to two textbooks free of charge. The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.
