Position Summary: Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks applicants for the position of Undergraduate Engagement Librarian, reporting to the Teaching & Learning Engagement unit. Working widely across the library system and the University, this position presents an opportunity to be deeply engaged across the teaching and learning enterprise.While the core duties of this position will revolve around designing, developing, and implementing various types of library instruction, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape parts of this position based on her or his interests and skills. In particular, the successful candidate may have strength in digital literacy, curriculum development, or another area that will be useful for the Learning Division work.
Contributing to and assisting with development of the Libraries’ digital and information literacy program, to include:
- Collaborating across units to develop a vision for the digital literacy program and working with library faculty to operationalize that vision, with a focus on the English curriculum
- Contributing to coordination of the Libraries’ engagement with First Year Writing, to include scheduling instruction, strategizing pedagogical approaches, and assisting with assessment of student learning outcomes
- Seeking opportunities to design, develop, and evaluate digital and information literacy instruction for foundational and upper-level students
- Contributing progressive, original approaches and ideas to discussions and implementations of digital and information literacy at University Libraries and across campus
- Working with collegiate faculty and liaison librarians to identify strategic areas within the curriculum to pilot innovative pedagogies and other High-Impact Practices
- Providing customized digital literacy consultations for faculty and students
- Pursuing professional development and training related to digital literacy
- Contributing progressive, original approaches and ideas to discussions and implementations of digital and information literacy at University Libraries and across campus
- Working with collegiate faculty and liaison librarians to identify strategic areas within the curriculum to pilot innovative pedagogies and other High-Impact Practices
- Providing customized digital literacy consultations for faculty and students
- Pursuing professional development and training related to digital literacy
Serving as a library liaison to the English department, to include:
- Participating in the appropriate liaison working group, teaching upper-level instruction, providing research consultations, and purchasing collections materials that support research and teaching needs
- Attending meetings and events for English department, communicating items of news and interest from and back to the Libraries, and finding referrals to other service areas in the Libraries
- Designing, teaching, and evaluating credit-bearing online graduate courses for English students
- Collaborating with instructional designers to develop learning objects, including online modules and tutorial videos for English
Supporting University Libraries’ teaching and learning initiatives
- Designing and developing instruction (face-to-face, blended and online) for foundational and First Year Writing courses
- Collaborating within the Division, Libraries, and University on learning-related activities
- Collaborating and providing leadership on learning related activities within the Unit, Division, Libraries, and University-wide to include serving on appropriate professional committees
- Providing quality services in a professional manner with a demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence, and diversity and inclusion
- Performing other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
- Broad knowledge and understanding of library instruction and principles relating digital and information literacies
- Understanding of current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in library instruction and higher education
- Strong interpersonal skills in outreach, relationship building, and collaboration
- Ability to work as part of a team in order to accomplish departmental and institutional goals in a fast-paced, energetic environment
- Demonstrated learner-oriented approach to instruction and other library services
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning
