Dear Geography Undergrads:
The opportunity described below and in the attached brochures might be of interest to some of you wanting a study abroad/undergrad research experience this summer.
Dr. Alderman
--------------------------------------------------

Summer 2017 - Geophysical, geoarchaeological, and archaeological field school run through the Religious Studies department and directed by Dr.
Erin Darby and Robert Darby. The field site is located 70 km north of the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan and focuses on the excavation of the Roman fort site of Ayn Gharandal. Erin and Robert have been directing the field school since 2010. Class sizes average between 15 and 20 students.

Students come from a variety of North American schools with diverse backgrounds including archaeology, classics, religious studies, and anthropology. This upcoming field season (June 18 - July 31, 2017), however, we are including a geophysical and geoarchaeological analysis of the area that will focus on the collection and analysis of ground penetrating radar and gradiometer data in conjunction with a sediment and soil analysis of the site stratigraphy. This module will encompass a 3-week block within the 6-week long field school and will focus on the collection, analysis, management, and presentation of remotely sensed data (specifically GPR and gradiometry). As part of the AGAP field school, the students will participate in the archaeological field school excavations and activities, but will also have the 3-week block set aside to participate in the geophysical and landscape analysis.

Students will learn to:
(1) use a Real Time Kinematic (RTK) satellite navigation system to layout grids and collect surface topography
(2) collect and process GPR and gradiometry data
(3) incorporate those data with other remotely sensed data such as aerial photographs, digital orthoquads, and site maps using ArcGIS 10.4,
(4) critically evaluate and present those data in a final report as part of a site-specific landscape reconstruction.
