Full-time, term position (2 years)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Iowa State University Library seeks a promising scholar with demonstrated expertise, leadership potential, and scholarly impact in the area of digital preservation for its Digital Preservation Research Fellowship.  This position will provide expertise and coordinate efforts to develop a digital preservation program safeguarding the Iowa State University Library’s local digital assets, both born digital and converted, including electronic records, digital objects (text, image, audiovisual), web pages, and datasets.  The Digital Preservation Research Fellow will assess the state of our digital preservation activities, identify collection priorities, and spearhead the launch of new processes designed to ensure access to legacy digital files and datasets owned or stewarded by the Library.  The Research Fellow may also develop awareness and understanding of digital preservation through advocacy and teaching opportunities targeting specific needs of the faculty, staff, students, university departments, and the general public.

The Fellow will report to the Associate Dean for Curation Services and lead digital preservation work across the library, working closely and collaboratively with multiple library divisions, to develop strategies to ensure sustainable, consistent procedures and guidelines and to integrate digital preservation policy requirements into broader library functions.

The Fellow will be expected to conduct original research. This position has the potential to support research and curriculum development in the following areas: preservation and re-use of digital archival materials; digitization management, digital preservation systems analysis and design, digital preservation policies and standards, preservation of institutional repositories, and digital curation and learning.

ISU students, staff, and faculty strive to overcome historical and divisive biases in our society. Library staff must embrace an environment of inclusion that moves beyond simple tolerance to recognizing the richness in individual identities of people, and diverse perspectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  Earned PhD in Library Science, Information Studies, Information Systems, or similar program by the beginning of the appointment.

Preferred:  Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation management and digital preservation policies and programs; knowledge of current technologies, standards, and practice in digital preservation; an interest in producing peer-reviewed scholarship; and excellent interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.  Understanding of the requirements of a Trusted Digital Repository, and familiarity with intellectual property rights and metadata standards as they pertain to digital preservation.
